Conflagrations Stifl Are Big Threat To UntedStates Cities Fire Seen as Major Wea ., pon In Any Future War Fire Catastrophes Increase Since War Since 1900, 133 conflagrations have devastated cities in the United States and Canada, destroying 1,274 lives, 40,000 buildings and other property valued- at $785,000,000, according to the National Fire Protection Asso ciation. Although definitions of conflagra tions vary, fire protection men gener ally consider them to. be fires which spread through several buildings, across streets and of a size greater than available fire apparatus can suc cessfully fight. Better building conditions, more water suppltes and improved fire ap paratus have greatly reduced the dan ger of conflagrations in America. But, the NFPA says, a combination es unfavorable circumstances, such as wind and low humidity, interruption of water supplies, fires i« congested slum areas, or a series of simultan eous fires can still produce devastat ing results. In'' addition, the advent of the in cendiary bomb and th? A-bomb, in jects possibilities of conflagration in spite of advances in fire fighting. Four-fifths of the damage to Eng lish and German cities during the war was fire damage. In some Japanese towns, the proportion of property damaged by fire was nearly 100 per cent. In any future war, fire undoubted ly will be a major weapon, especially against American cities, whose com bustibility is considered greater than j those of England and Germany. “The extent to which these United States cities will be able to withstand enemy air attacks will depend primarily on steps taken to prevent peacetime con flagrations. The best defense against conflagrations is also the best de fense against war-time fires,” the NFPA says. —————-————— - - 111 HICEIKT STRAIGHT BOURB ON WHlSinr [years qw J2l^| 86 PROOF . The brothers are Harold and C. F. . Dellinger, Jr., of Cherryville, who are stringing their aromatic leaf on 27-inch lengths of No. 9 guage gal vanized wire, by the handfuls. The old method required stringing the leaves with a needle. Roy H. Crouse, agronomy special- IN MEMORIAM In loving memory of my brother, Rochelle Blanchard, who died nine years ago while in service for his country, August, 29, 1942: The road to a permanent sunset j Is a road that each must tread — And though it brings us sorrow When a loved one goes ahead, There is comfort and joy in knowing We will meet again some day, When our earthly tasks are over And the clouds have rolled away. “Gone, but not forgotten.” —A Sister, Eddie Mae Blanchard. . THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C, THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 1951. - ■ ■ « ist for the State College Extension’ Service, says five or six persons wore needed to take care of a half acre crop at harvest time under the old system. The Dellingers handle their crop about six times faster. The Gaston farmers are growing more than three acres of aromatic tobacco this year—the largest crop ever grown on one farm in North Carolina. Next year they plan to produce an even larger crop.,, With the Dellinger metWl of stringing, jt is necessary to supply some heat —from 90 to 100 degrees— circulated by a fan, at night and dur ing unfavorable weather when the to bacco cannot be rolled out into sun light for curing. Crouse says it is now possible for farmers who have had experience in growing aromatic tobacco, and know how to produce desirable quality in the field, to convert their building and equipment to handle the crop in a more speedy and convenient way. “This means,” asserts the special ist, “that aromatic tobacco can be worked into the farming program to furnish a tpore substantial part of the income for many farm families in the upper piedmofit' and western counties.” Reminder The indignant, man was known in the lawyer’s office. “Look here,” he burst out, “you’ve charged me for two consultations on the fifth of last month and I was only here once.” “The fifth of last month,” said the MASSES NEXT SUNDAY IN EDENTON AND WINDSOR The Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered Sunday, Septem ber 2, in the Duke of Windsor Hotel little dining room, Windsor, at 9 A.
