Bankers Endorse Nickels Referendum 450 Banks of State Are Campaigning For Large Vote The North Carolina Bankers Asso ciation has endorsed “Nickels for Know-How” through its Agricultural Committee, it is announced by Wiley W. Meares, president of the associa tion, and executive vice-president of the Planters National ißank and Trust Company of Rocky Mount. The committee unanimously endors ed the referendum and called on the 450 banks of the State to present the merits of the proposal to all of their farmer customers. Meares expressed the hope that the farmers would approve the proposal to expand agrioulture research and edu cation when the referendum is held on November 3. The enabling act pass ed .by the 1951 General Assembly pro vides for a contribution of five cents per ton on feed and fertilizer, if ap proved by the farm vote. The money would be collected from the manufact urers by the Commissioner of Agri culture and paid into the agricultural foundation. The officers of the North Carolina Bankers Association and members of the Agricultural Committee will cam paign for a large vote on November 3. PTA At White Oak Enjoys Turkey Dinner Members of White Oak PTA turn ed out in large numbers at the last meeting, when members made new plans for carrying on the lunch room 'program. After their meeting .they enjoyed a turkey dinner, sponsored by the Lunch Room Committee. The guests were made welcome by Mrs. H. F. Creecy. The Rev. C. C. Boone sang, “My Task” and H. A. Taylor gave a short reading. The Reeves’ quartet sang a selection. Mrs. E. L-Byrd gave a dinner speech, after which the turkey dinner was served. The president .of the PTA gave a short respqnse after the dinner. The Lunch Room Committee wishes to thank everybody who helped to make the effort a success, especially Eden ton guests. To those that attended the concert by The Harmonizing Four, with Mad am Marie Knight as guest soloist, the PTA thanks all who attended. Mrs. Fannie Parrish Died Sunday Morning Mrs. Fannie M. Parrish, 73, died Sunday morning at 9:45 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. A. Spruill, after an illness of two months. She was a native of Chowan County, the wife of the late J. H. Parrish. Surviving are five sons, J.-T. Par rish of Tyner, J. L. Parrish of Win ton, A. E. Parrish ,of Portsmouth, E. M. Parrish of Newport News, F. R. Parrish of Plant City, Fla., and three daughters, Mrs. T. B. Dail of Newport News, Mrs. John Morris of Tyner and < Mrs. R. A. Spruill of Edenton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Rocky Hock Baptist Church, of which she | was a member. The pastor, the Rev. Ed Gordon officiated. Pieces of equipment were shown and discussed. Such ques tions as: Is it easy to use? Is it easy to clean? Will it serve more than one purpose? Will it do the job quicker and easier? Is the size suit able ? were used to discuss each piece. The girls learned names of new pieces of equipment and use of each of them. A bulletin, “Tools for Food Prepa ration”, was given to each girl. The content of this goes into more detail about each piece ’and pieces than the agent wtd able to discuss in the limited time. Mrs. Lin wood Ward In Organ Recital Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Ward spent Sunday in Conway, N. C., where they attended an organ recital Sunday night in the Conway Methodist Church given by Mrs. Linwood Ward, their daughter-in-law. Mrs. Ward also ren dered several selections on the violin-, accompanied at the organ by Miss Dorothy Ballenger of Chowan College. Mr. and Mrs. Ward formerly lived at the Beechwood farm in Edenton but are now making their home in Con way. Mrs. Ward presented the following numbers on the organ: Toccata in D Minor by Bach. Arioso bv Bach and Andante Cantabile in B flat by Tchaikovsky. Her violin numbers were Traumerei by Schumann and Ave Marie by Baeh-Gouno'b Edenton~BPW Club Holds Game Party One of the most enjoyable affairs of the season was held Thursday night at the Hofei Joseph Hewes when the Edenton Business and Professional Women’s Club staged their annual game party. The club room was attractively dec orated, carrying out the Halloween motif in both decorations and at in >w> - . - dividual tables. ' Twenty-one tables were arranged for the games with prizes given the high scorer at each table. A beauti ful cake, donated to the club by Miss Inez Felton, was won by Mrs. Caro line Thomas. Miss Agnes Chappell won the door prize and was presented a box of homemade candy, prepared and donated by Mrs. Emma Perkins. The affair was in charge of the fi nance and hospitality committees, with Miss Inez Felton and Mrs. Lydia Daniels as chairmen, respectively. Band Fails To Appear For Pocahontas Dance Members of the Degree of Poca hontas were embarrassed Saturday night When an orchestra failed to ap pear for a square dance in the ar mory, the reason for which is un known. However, quite a few remain ed to enjoy the evening by the use of records. The admission price was offered refunded to those who did not wish to remain, and members of the Poca hontas appreciate the interest and co operation of those who did remain. The affair was climaxed by a cake walk, with J. Edwin Bufflap winning the cake,- which was baked by Mrs. Mary Harmatuck. METHODIST SOCIETY MEETS The Woman’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church met Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. J. W. Davis, when 19 members were present. An interesting and helpful program was presented under the leadership of Mrs. J. H. Thigpen, with other members taking part. Miss Mamie Hogg, spiritual life leader, conducted an inspiring study on the life of Alcaham. Mrs. Roy Harrell, president, pre sided over the business session and the hostess served delicious refresh ments at the close of the meeting.
