PAGE FOUR Objectives Are Listed For Handicap Week Mrs. Cone B. White, manager of the Edenlton Employment Security jCommiasion, releases the following missions and objectives in connection with National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week which is being ob served this week. 1. Develop and improve community and State NEPH organisations so that a dynamic year-round program of public information and education is initiated and carried out. 2. Direct local NEPH programs to ward employers with jobs to offer, including small employers who may not have been asked to cooperate be fore. 3. Encourage all employers to hire qualified handicapped workers, includ ing those with severe disabilities. 4. Encourage physically handicap ped individuals to apply for necessary rehabilitation services from their State Vocational Rehabilitation ageftcy or the Veterans’ Administration. 5. Improve and expand counseling and selective placement services for the handicapped in the public employ .jnent offices. 6. Encourage greater community support of private and public agencies providing services for preparation and placement of handicapped workers. In addition to the general objectives tha following special objectives are specific enough to light the way for individuals and'groups wishing t» W« | operate in this program of promoting greater employment opportunities for the physically handicapped. 7. Encourage physicians to use pre employment physical examinations as a means of matching or restoring the worker’s abilities to the job’s requdre ments, not as a search for defects leading to thoughtless rejection of the application. 8. Encourage union officials to be come more familiar with the capa bilities of the handicapped and to par ticipate more actively in plant pro grams for their employment. 9. Encourage physicians and wel fare workers to recommend early physical and vocational rehabilitation services leading to reemployment of injured workers. 10. Encourage the inclusion of the story of handicapped workers in sec ondary, under-graduate and post graduate courses at schools and col leges. 11. Encourage community survey projects aimed at locating handicap ped men and women who can be em ployed or prepared for jobs. 12. Provide for forums, institutes, seminars and expositions for explain ing the “know how’’ of selective placement to management and labor officials. 13. Encourage cooperation of all community agencies and organizations in providing the services necessary for Korean war disabled and other handicapped veterans to make a satis factory adjustment to civilian life. 14. Last but not least, encourage employers to list johs for handicap ped workers with the nearest State Employment Service local office, and encourage the handicapped to regis ter for jobs there. TAX COLLECTIONS Sheriff J. A. Bunch reported to the County Commissioners Monday that 1951 taxes collected in September amounted to $257.12, which brought total 1951 taxes collected to $169,- 045.54.
