The Meredith Victory broke all
world recorde as a (refugee ship dur
ing the evacuation of Huhgmaim, North
Korea, in December, 1950, tire Ameri

ed. She was operated at. the time
by a private American ship line, with
a regular civilian crew, but serving
under Navy command.
Built to carry Only a crew of under
50, her captain gave orders itjo take
aboard as many of the hapless North
Korean refugees as the ship could
hold. Over 14,000 had crowded aboard.
They stood for three days, jammed to
gether because they did not have room
to silt down until they landed without
a casualty at a refugee camp in South
Korea. Five babies were bom on
the trip.
“We hope we don’t have (to pull the
ship out of lay up again,” a spokes
man for the Institute said. “But if

merchant marine is ready.”

cooking utensils who make unusual
claims about their pots and pans.
There are some loose in North Caro
lina. We’ve had several letters from
women saying, “There has been a
man selling cooking utensils around,
here who says his produce prevents
cancer, dandruff, high blood pres
sure and lots of other ailments that i
are caused, by eating foods cooked
in aluminum. Is this so?”
Our Answer: There is not a word
of truth in it. You will find that
these men are usually trying to
scare you into buying some high
priced equipment. Here is what the
Mayo Clinic and American Medical*
Association have to say about alum- 1
inum and cancer:
Dr. Russell M. Wilder, M.D., of the
Mayo Clinic writes: “We have no
information in the Mayo Clinic that
aluminum ware is in any way re
sponsible for cancer or any disor
ders either of the stomach or other
organs. This question is one that
has arisen repeatedly, apparently
chiefly as a result of the efforts
of salesmen of the various other
utensil companies to discredit the
use of aluminum utensils-”
A bulletin from the Council on
Foods and Nutrition, American Med
ical Assoication, says: “There are
still many persons who cling to the
old prejudice against aluminum.
