SECTION ONE- ChowanStudentlsl Honored At Stats! Durward F. Bateman Is I Awarded Honor Cer tificate Durward Franklin Bateman, son of I Mr. and Mrs. Benny Bateman of the Cross Roads community was honored ’ last week at State College, where he is a member of the freshman class. Young Bateman was presented an hon or certificate by Phi Kappa Phi in rec- | ognition for having earned freshman scholastic honors for the first two ( quarters of his freshman year at N. C. State College. Bateman was also one of 10 top freshmen selected to compete for the . Danforth scholarship. This scholar ship is awarded annually to a fresh man enrolled in agriculture education. It is provided by the Danforth Foun dation and pays for the entire cost of two weeks of intensive leadership training at Camp Miniwanca located on Lake Michigan from August 17 to August 30. Bateman has written a theme in the contest, but the winner has not yet been namd. He was a member of the 1952 graduating class of Chowan High School. Varied Program For Farm And Home Week In just two more weeks, Farm and Home Week 1953 will begin officially at North Carolina State College. Thousands of farm men and women will descend upon the capital city and the college for a week of fun, infor mation and inspiration. According to the planning commit tee, this year’s program holds more variety than any other Farm and Home Week to date. And just a glance at the tentative plans certainly indi cates that this year’s festivities will make the 1953 week at State College one to remember. Included on the program will be the 50th birthday celebration of Agri cultural Extension and a tribute to Chancellor and Mrs. John W. Har relson. Also highlighting the week’s program will be the performance of the famous 82nd Airborne Division Band from Fort Bragg and the 500- voice combined Home Demonstration Club Chorus. During the Farm and Home Week program, awards will be made by Radio Station WPTF to the two rural women’s choral groups and to the two best rural mixed chor uses.
