SECTION ONE- SOCIETY NEWS Mr. and Mra. James Bond and family are spending their vacation at Nags Head this week,- t „ Mr. and Mrs. W. Q. Quitch and Mrs. W. C. Bunch, Jr., attended gradua tion exercises at Wake Forest Col lege at which time W. C. (BUI) Bunch, Jr., received his BA. degree. Mrs. BUI Brooks and son BUly are visiting Mrs. Brooks’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bunch. They will be join ed this week by Mr. Brooks and then proceed to Nova Scotia to spends va cation. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Peel and Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Nixon spent the week-end at Nags Head. Ray Garrett, a member of the Ma rine Corps who has been confined to the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth, spent the week-end visiting his grand mother, Mrs. John Garrett. Officers Installed For Edenton’s BPW Club last Week Impressive Candlelight Ceremony Held In Parish House New officers of the Edenton Busi ness and Professional Women’s Club were installed in an impressive candle light ceremony Tuesday night of last week at a dinner meeting held in the Parish House. Mrs. Alice Towe, district director, conducted the installation services, followed by the group giving the club pledge and singing the emblem bene diction. Mrs. Towe outlined the pro' gram and goals for 1953-54, with the theme for the new year being “Pros perity For Freedom.” She commend ed the out-going officers and organi zation for the fine work done in the i district during the past year. Heading up the organization for the new term are: Mrs. Evelyn Jackson, president; Mrs. Laura Ferguson, first vice president; Mrs. Nora Boyce, sec ond vice president; Mrs. Lena Leary, recording secretary; Mrs. Emma Per kins, corresponding secretary, and Mrs. Bertha Bunch, treasurer. In accepting the new leadership, Mrs. Jackson told the members, “It is a pleasure and honor to be elected president of this club and I am deeply humble for the faith you have in me. I shall try to do my part in making the organization a credit, and I ex pect you members to do the same by me with your cooperation.” The out-going president, Mrs. Annie Mills, presented the new president and club with a presiding gavel. She thanked the organization for the fine cooperation extended her during her term of office. Prior to the installation ceremotiy, a brief business session was held with Mrs. Mills presiding. Invocation was offered by Jack Mooney, after which the guests were recognized. A letter was read from Mrs. Annie Graham, the club’s past year Woman of the Year, in which was a SIOO check to be applied on the restoration of the Penelope Barker House, a project now being sponsored by the BPW Club along with two other Edenton organi zations. Hall left Eden ton Wednesday for Raleigh, where he attended funeral services for State Fire Marshall Sherwood Brockwell, who died Tuesday. Hall and Brock well were close friends for many years. 54 JAILED IN MAY Jailer Herman White on Monday reported to the County Commissioners that 54 persons were placed in the Chowan County jail during the month of May. Confinements ranged from one to 31 days. From the stand point of inspiration, this was probably one of the most successful conferences ever held. E. L.
