At the meetings projects were discussed, record books checked and then the boys were*taken into, a cotton Held and given a method demonstra tion on how to make a boll weevil and a square count. The boys learned their lesson very well, and after the ■demonstration they found several squares which were punctured by boll -weevils. Some of the squares were ..wjnctured and eggs were laid inside t ' e'squares. Others had feeding punc res. The club members soon learned distinguish between egg punctures >d feeding punctures. Cleanliness is, indeed, next to Godli ness. —John Wesley IMMUNIZATION CLINICS OFF IN PASQUOTANK AND PERQUIMANS Due entirely to lack of interest on the part of the people in the rural areas of Pasquotank and Perquimans Counties, the Health Department will not hold rural immunization clinics *. • i** * *• L———>LjL^^ESwMßßhftMMflMßfißßltMfliSßßi^^B^^^ gSSsJ ''Raspberries and dewberries have just about finished bearing for this season in Eastern and Central North Carolina and now is the time to prune them. To understand why we prune them at this time we should know something about the growth and fruit ing habits of these crops. Raspberries and dewberries bear most of their crop on new shoots that come out of canes of last season’s wood. Each season after bearing a crop the last ‘season canes will die and their place will be taken by new canes which come up from the roots of the plant. The old canes, therefore, should be re moved as soon as the crop is harvest ed. This-practice will give more room for the new canes to develop as well as to get rid of diseased plant ma terials. In Eastern North Carolina a slight this summer, it has been announced by Dr. B. B. McGuire, health officer. All persons needing or desiring such service may contact their private phy sician. Those people unable to pay their private physician for such ser vice may have the work done free, ac cording to State law, at their county health offices. , Recent experience has shown that so few people have been attending these rural clinics in Pasquotank and Perquimans as to make it not feasible to continue them. I L' gal Notices North Carolina, In The Chowan County. Superior Court. Before the Clerk Sadie B. Manley, Petitioner, vs. H. L. Manley, Defendant. NOTICE OF SUMMONS BY PUBLICATION The defendant, H. L. C., described in the petition which has been filed in this cause, and that said defendant is re quired to appear and answer or demur to the petition before said Clerk at his office in Edenton, North Carolina, on or before the’ sth day of August, THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C„ THURSDAY, JUNE 25,1953. ly different procedure is used for dew berries. As soon as the crop is har-: vested all canes, both old and young, are removed at the ground. Then the land is cultivated and a top dressing of nitrate of soda is applied. In a few daj% the new shoots will appear and will make sufficient growth during the rest of the season to produce a good crop the next year. This new growth and is not tied up to stakes until next is allowed to run along the ground spring. This practice gives a fair control of anthracnose disease of dew berries. The plant growth that is cut off at the ground should be destroyed by burning in order to get rid of all disease. In the mountain areas the season is not always long enough to permit the removal of the new canes. In that case only ;the old canes are removed. 1953, or the petitioner will apply for and be entitled to the relief demanded in said petition. Witness my hand this 20th day of June, 1953. LENA M.
