Weekly Devotional I
Column
By James Mackenzie
Do you remember the great Scot
tish comedian, Sir. Harry Lauder?
The other day I heard someone whist
ling one of his catchy little melodies,
and my mind went back to boyhood
days, when my dad would take me on
his knee, affect a rollicking Scotch
accent and sing Roamin’ in the Gloam
in’, The Waggle o the Kilt, or, per
haps, It’s Nice to Get up in the Morn
in’, but it’s Nicer to Lie in Bed.
One evening in Toronto, during the
first world war, as Sir Harry step
ped on the stage to sing one of his
lilting songs, he was handed a tele
gram informing him that his son,
John, had been killed in action. The
orchestra in the pit began the over
ture, but Lauder motioned them to
stop. With tear-dimmed eyes he read
the telegram to the vast audience as
sembled there. Then alone, without
accompaniment, he began to sing the
following:
O where and o where has my hielan’
laddie gone?
He has gone to fight the foe for the
king upon the throne;
And it’s o in my hairt that I wish him
safe at home.
Lauder managed to maintain his
composure until he reached the words:
Suppose and suppose that your hie
lan’ lad should die ?
The bagpipes would play over him,
and I’d lay me doon and cry;
And it’s o in my hairt that I wish he
may not die;
when he broke down completely.
Yet, out of his sorrow, Lauder
emerged by far the most popular
comic of his day, became the first en
tertainer to visit the front lines in
France, and, in 1919, was knighted by
the King of England, the first mem
ber of his profession to be so honored.
Someone once asked Sir Harry how
he could “carry” on as a comedian
when his heart was so laden with
sorrow. “When confronted with sor
row a man will do one of three
things,” replied Lauder: “he will sour
on the world and give over to despair;
he will seek solace in drink; or he will
turn to God. I have turned to God.”
Lauder was right. Though sorrow
encompass us, there is courage and
strength to be found in the God of
all comfort, and in His promise to
Christians that someday, in a better
land than this, He will wipe away all
tears from our eyes; and there shall
be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying (Revelation 21:4).
I can call to mind another Harry
Lauder song that goes something like
this:
Keep right on to the end of the road,
Keep right on to the end;
Though the way be long,
Let your heart be strong,
Keep right on ’round the bend;
If you tire and weary,
Still journey on,
’Til you come to your happy abode;
And all you love, and are dreaming of,
Will be there at the end of the road.
