SECTION TWO- Chowan’s Farmers Stop BoH Weevils Large Percentage Are Now Dusting Cotton Regularly “Most of the Chowan County cot ton growers have determined not to share crops with the boll weevil this year,” says County Agent C. W. Ov erman. Based upon personal contacts, it ap pears that a very large per cent of the larger growers are dusting their cot ton regularly and perhaps most of the small growers are doing likewise. Wher - as many as three applications of Toxaphene have been applied the boll weevil count is not exceeding 5 to 8 per cent ,and is mostly 2 to 3 per cent. No boll worm damage has been ob served up to this time. Growers are still being advised to apply ten pounds of 20 per cent Toxaphene every seven days. Weekly Devotional 1 Column By James Mackenzie l * One day upon Golgotha, Three men died; A thief—the Christ—a thief Were crucified. A cross of hope for one Hope not too late; His fellow died upon A cross of hate. Between these two all space Were not more wide; Between them, and for both, Christ Jesus died. If there is one story in the Bible that stands as mute refutation to all the vain, foolish theories of sinful men, it is the story of the thief on the cross, who repented and placed his faith in Christ. Notice three things about his salvation: 1. It was entirely apart from the organized church. That thief had nev er been baptized, he had never at- Flowers Choice of Freshly Cut Bouquets Carefully Ensembled Corsages or Deco-Right Potted Plants PHONE 342 Lula White’s Flower Shop 203 WEST CHURCH STREET fmmANTsX MAY 8£ • • o XmtMrres/M j-, FOR FREE INSPECTION CAU World's lorgtil Post Control Co.) Just so, all these things, though good in themselves, will never save a single soul, and he who trusts in them is surely lost. 2. It was instantaneous and com plete. There is no such thing in the Bible as gradually becoming a Chris tian; when God save* a lost soul He does it on the double quick. D. L. Moody tells of a man who decided he would gradually become a Christian. His plan was to cease beating his wife every night, as had been his cus tom, and beat her every other night instead. Then, after a few months, he planned to cut it down to two beat ings a week, then one beating a week and so on. But his wife died before he had a chance to finish his gradual conversion to Christianity. How fool ish! That poor thief had no time to bother with a gradual salvation; if anything was to be done for him it had to be done in a hurry. Furthermore, he was completely saved, as it is written, “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.” That thief wasn’t one-half saved, he wasn’t three-quarters saved, but he was made “every whit whole.” • All his sins were forgiven him. If there was ever a fit cpnt’Hr te for purga tory it was this thief, but Jesus said to him, “Today thou shalt be with me in Paradise.” ) 3. It was by faith in Jesus Christ, apart from so called “good works.” That thief had no time to store up works of righteousness; he had been a thief all his life, and was soon to pass oh to reap the reward of his evil deeds. Yet he was saved, and that by a simple act of faith in the divine Son of God. Now this does not mean that Bible believing Protestant Chris tians are opposed to good works, as some slanderously delight to report. It does mean that true Christian liv ing is the natural outgrowth of saving faith in Christ, and does not precede it. A living faith will result in works, but it is the faith, not the works, that saves (see John 3: 16; Ephesians 2: 8; Acts 16: 31). Reader, where is the ground of your hope of eternal salvation ? Learn from the thief on the cross that there is but one way to heaven, and that is through Jesus Christ. “No man cometh unto the Father,” He said, “but by me.” And again, “I am the door, by me if any man enter in he shall be saved” (John 14: 6; John 10s 9). As Paul put it, “There is one God, and, one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (I Timothy 2: 6). There is a fountain filled with blood, Drawn from Immanuel’s veins; And sinners plunged beneath that flood Lose all their guilty stains. The dying thief rejoiced to see That fountain in his day; And there may we, though vile as he Wash all our sins away. Mr. Morris impressed on the club members the importance of furnishing their pullets with plenty of fresh wa ter during the hot weather. Growing : pullets as well as laying hens should be provided with lots of fresh water and good shade during the summer months. A range shelter for growing stock is a wise investment.
