Boil Weevil Making Bid For Cotton Crop County Agent Advises Continuation of Cot ton Dusting "Share-Cropper 801 l Weevil is try ing his best to get a good share of the cotton crop,” says County Agent C. W. Overman. The nine dusted fields examined on last week showed from three to 26 per cent punctured squares and they averaged 12 per cent of the squares punctured. Five of these fields had less than 10 per cent punctured squares. Most of them had, in the past two weeks, not been dusted which accounts for the increase in punctured squares, most likely resulting from weevils migrating in from other fields. The three undusted fields showed 50 per cent, 46 per cent and 62 per cent punctured squares. Much of the fruit has shed from these undusted fields and the weevil appeared to be very happy with the toll he had taken. Growers are being advised to use the boll worm dust as well as the weevil insecticide from now on. Where ■cotton hasn’t been dusted for the past two weeks it is believed it is advis able to dust this week, particularly to control the boll worm which is gradu ally showing greater appearance. * The extremely dry weather "has been relieved to some extent with a good rain on Monday night and Wednesday. The rain extended over the entire county, a little heavier in some spots than in others, but a welcomed rain just the same. Take Soil Samples Now For Fall Crops Now is a good time to have soil samples tested from fields tp be plant •ed to Ladino clover pastures, small grains and other fall crops, according to W. C. Johnson, soil testing specia list with the State Department of Agriculture. Johnson says many of these soils may need lime and says it ig best to apply the lime and work it into the soil two or three months before the crop is planted. And it is always best to apply sufficient lime to last sev eral years. A soil test is the only sure way of knowing just how much lime is needed. Johnson says that in order to ob tain the best results from soil tests, farmers should follow sampling in structions printed on the back of the Have Money j When You Need It It’s a wise precaution to have money in the 9 bank for that unforseen emergency—that un expected opportunity. Fields should be divided for samp ling according to past cropping, fer tilization, liming practices, and dif ferences in soil conditions. The farm er should take at least one sample for every five-acre area. “The prin ciple ip taking a good soil sample,” Johnson says, “is to obtain a slice or core of soil from the plow layer (us ually six inches) from 15 to 20 spots scattered over the field.” All of these cores or slices should be put into one box to represent the soil in the area on which information is desired. Send the samples to the Soil Test ing Division, State Department of Ag riculture, Raleigh, and in about two weeks you get a report showing the results of the tests and suggestions as to liming and fertilization practices for the crops to be grown for the next three years.
