4-Day Observance On
Flight Anniversary
December 17
Reconstruction of the buildings and
launching apparatus used by the
Wright Brothers in the first flight
will be a feature of the celebration of
the Golden Anniversary of Powered
Flight at Kill Devil Hills, North Car
olina, on December 17.
Plans for the 50th anniversary cele
bration are now being made by a
joint committee from four organiza
tions concerned with the preservation
of the birthplace of modern aviation,
all working with the national commit
tee for the 50th anniversary celebra
tion headed by General James H. Doo
little. The plans include construction
o1 a landing strip on the actual site
of the first flight.
The Kill Devil Hills steering com
mittee is headed by Miles Clark of
Elizabeth City, who was appointed by
Carl Goerch, chairman of the North
Carolina committee appointed by Gov
ernor William B. Umstead to direct
the state’s participation in the anni
versary celebration.
Organizations and their representa
tives on the steering committe are:
Kill Devil Hills Memorial Society, S.
Wade Marr of Elizabeth City, N. C.;
Air Force Association, Ralph V.
Whitener, Washington, D. C.; Nation
al Park Service, Elbert Cox, Region
al Director, Richmond, Va.; and
North Carolina Commission to Pro
mote, Conduct and Participate in the
Celebration of the First Airplane
Flight, Carl Goerch, chairman, Ra
leigh, N. C.
Tentative plans call for a 4-day ob
servance beginning on the flight anni
versary, with a big fly-over of Arm
ed Services planes exactly at 10:35
A. M., on December 17. This would
be followed by a memorial service at
the monument, on Kill Devil Hill, five
miles from Kitty Hawk, where the
Wrights made their home while con
ducting their experiments on the
North Carolina coast, and by a ban
quet for invited guests at Nags Head
beach.
The State Committee will sponsor
civic and educational observance of
the Golden Anniversary throughout
the in which modern aviation
was bom.

THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C., THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, 1953.
The day of the barrel-stave method
of raising children may have passed
to some extent. Yet there is a su
pervision that parents must exercise if (
they are going to be fair to their boys
and girls. Youth needs a rudder in
the hands of parents who can steer ,
their children with loving firmness
through the waters of growing up. If ,
the hand comes off the rudder, or if
it is too relaxed, eager, inexperienced
youth will stray off the course. Is it,
then, fair to blame the child? There
is a duty of parenthood to keep a firm
hand on the rudder. The parent who
fails to do this, or the youth who fails 1
to answer to the rudder, must an- (
