What makes a boat tippy? That’s
a question sportmen should know
more about. Since most boats are
bought without being tried first,
knowledge of just what features affect
stability becomes important. Certain
ly it is to the man who plans to build
or assemble his own small boat, or
who rents a boat.
Here are the factors affecting tippi
ness or stability in a small boat, as
outlined by boating expert Willard'
Crandall:
1— Width. By far the most import
ant factor. Just a few inches can
make a difference even a 300-pound
fisherman would notice.
2 Bottoms Style. Flat bottoms give
the least tip, round bottoms the most,
largely because the flats have more
affective beam more with well in
the water. The more round or V
bottom tends toward flatness, the
more stable it’s apt to be.
3 Flare to Sides. Tip may start
just as easily in a boat with sides
that lean outward markedly, but it
will stop a lot quicker.
4 Height of Seats. The higher i
up any weight aboard is, the more
tippy the boat becomes. Center of
gravity should be kept low that’s
the way it’s usually stated. Low
seats do make a difference, especially
with narrow boats.
5 Length. This is less import
ant than width but does play a part.
The longer the boat the more there
is to be shoved against the water
when any tipping starts.
6 Keel. One with some depth
or weight to it, or both, will help
steady the boat.
7 Height of sides. Last, and
least important factor. But high
sides do add to tippiness a little, since
they catch wind better and add weight
higher up.
As long as we’re are on the subject
of boats, I’d like to comment on boat
handles. If your wood outboard is
heavy and dosn’t have lifting handles,
don’t hesitate to put some on. You’ll
need three; two are placed on the
back of the transom, one on each side
and the other is put on the front deck
right at the point of the bow .It’s
best to bolt rather than screw these
handles on. They sell for around $ 2
at marine supply stores.
Most people will speak the truth
when it is profitable, but few will
speak it when it costs them money.
Progress does not flow from ex
cuses. f

More Milk Per Cow
Is What Pays Off
“More milk per cow is what really
pays off in the dairy business,” says
Lee Williams, who operates a small
dairy farm near Marble in Western
North Carolina’s Cherokee County.
Williams firmly believes “it takes
just as much feed to maintain a 1,000
pound low-producing cow as a 1,000
pound high producer.” And he’s try
ing to select his foundation stock from
the high producers.
G. H. Farley, county agent for the
N. C. State College Agricultural Ex
tension Service, says Williams’ small
farm nestles in a warm valley between
two tree-covered mountains. The prev
ious owner had been unable to make
enough money on the place to pay the
taxes. But with the assistance of the
Farmers Home Administration, Wil
liams has transformed the valley and
hillsides into an area of lush, green
Ladino clover and grass.
Williams started producing Grade
A milk for sale commercially four
years ago. He only had two cows.
Now he has a herd of nine high pro
ducing purebreds and grades. All
along he has emphasized high pro
duction in building his herd, says

County Agent Farley. Two of his
cows have been milking around eight
gallons each per day. At present
milk prices, Williams figures each of
these cows are bringing in more than
SIOO per month after his haul bill is
paid.
Williams is continuing his herd im
provement work. By taking advan
tage of the proven sires of the arti
ficial breeding program, he figures he
will “get the fartherest in the short

“If you happen to be around in the

something,” says Williams, pointing
to his fine heifer calves.
