Page Four Mrs. J. W. Cates Dies After Extended Illness Mrs. Effie B. Cates, 71, died Friday night at 7:30 o’clock at her cottage at Nags Head, following a long illness. She was the widow of the late J. W. Cates, for many years superintendent of the Edenton Cotton Mills. Surviving are three sons, John Cates of Fayetteville, Clarence Cates of Ocean View and Clyde Lee Cates of Norfolk; one daughter, Mrs. Gra ham B. Whitted of Roxobel; one bro ther, Nathaniel B. Birchett of Dur ham and a sister, Mrs. R. W. Carden of Edenton. She was a member of the Edenton Methodist Church, where funeral ser vices were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The pastor, the Rev. E. B- Edwards, officiated and burial was ir Beaver Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were A. B. Harless, Gerald James, B. L. Knox, John A. Holmes, Dr. Martin Wisely and Dr. A. F.
