Advice Offered To
Vets Buying Homes
Five Questions Advanc
ed For Consideration
Before Buying *
Advice is offered by Veterans Ad
ministration to veterans who are con
templating the purchase of a home
with the aid of a GI loan.
Five check points were listed by
VA for a home buying veteran to con
sider with regard to the neighborhood
in which his prospective home is to be
located. These were in the form of
questions, as follows:
First: Is the house located in a
place that is reasonably handy for
shopping center, schools, churches, bus
or street car transportation ? The
answer should be yes.
Second: Is the neighborhood gen
erally pleasant and attractive and are
the neighboring houses at least as
good as the one to be purchased ? The
answer should be affirmative.
Third: Does the neighborhood have
local zoning laws, to protect the
home owner by regulating such things
as future intrusion of commercial |
property and the size and type of
houses which can be built in the
neighborhood ? Again, the answer
should be yes.
Fourth: Regarding the possibility
of unpleasant noise, is the location of
the house far enough away from dis
agreeable noises like certain factories
and highways carrying heavy truck
traffic ? The answer should be yes.
Fifth: Does the neighborhood have
adequate improvements like streets,
sidewalks, curbing and gutters? Un
less the answer is yes, the purchaser
may have to later put up his share
of special assessment charges for in
stalling these improvements.
VA urged veterans to make careful
checks of the construction of the
house itself and also the neighbor
hood before signing a contract to buy,
and then to be certain they under
stand exactly the terms of the con
tract.
Veterans have plenty of time, the
agency said, to make careful checks
before purchasing a home. For Ko
rean veterans—those with service
anywhere in the armed forces since
June 27, 1950—the privilege of GI
loan guaranty will not expire until ten
years after the* present emergency has
been declared ended by the President ',
or Congress. World War II veterans!
have until July 25, 1957 in which to'
exercise their loan guaranty privilege.

TEXT: “Too much gold can sink
the finest 4hip.”—-Anon.
More than 60 years ago, an uncle
of mine wanted to become a cowboy.
He was city-bred and unable to ride
a horse. However, he applied for and
obtained a job as cook at a Wyoming
ranch. The fact was, he couldn’t
cook, either. Buying a cook-book, he
studied it on the train. His first
job was to bake bread for the ranch
hands. Reading that one portion of
yeast would make the bread rise, he
determined to make the fluffiest
bread they had ever seen. He tripled
the amount of yeast called for in the
recipe. Then he left the dough in
'the warm oven overnight to rise. It

Q —ls a service-connected disability,
incurred since Korea, enough in itself
to entitle me to vocational training

A—No. In addition, you must have
a need for training to overcome the

they mix too much of it in their lives.
