«—f——mi 11 " —1 Some Farmers Give | Away Their Cotton Sold at Sacrifice Instead Os Grading to Sell At True Worth The state PMA administrative offi cer, H. D. Godfrey, said today “as much as I hate to, I am forced to ad ' mit that some farmers in North Car olina penalize themselves hundreds of/ dollars each year on their cotton alone ' by dumping it on a crowded market.” ( Godfrey pointed to the difficult task most Tar Heel farmers had rais-1 ing cotton this summer. It has notj been a good cotton year in North Car- I olina. Yet, he said, a great many North Carolina farmers sell their cot ton at sacrifice prices rather than have it graded and sell according to < its true worth. Immediately after receiving the 1 classification card, said Godfrey, i “each cotton farmer should compare 1 the local cotton market price with the Government loan rate.” It is never < necessary for him to sell his cotton at less than the loan rate for the par ticular staple length and grade, he i added. All commodity loan and purchase agreement programs are provided by : Congress to permit farmers to market their products in an orderly manner, : avoiding market “gluts” that drain away the farmers’ hard-earned cash 1 and upset the nation’s economic and price structures, Godfrey said. The state PMA officer said he felt that committeemen in every North Carolina county feel exactly as he does about the use of these loan pro grams. He advised farmers to talk with their local PMA committeemen or county PMA ofice manager to se cure details of the cotton loan pro gram. 2,318 Arrested For Speeding In September State Highway Patrolmen arrested 2,318 Tar Heel motorists for speeding in September making a nine month total of 20,670 speed law violators ap prehended by.the patrol. Driving without an operator’s li cense followed closely in the list of violations reported by the patrol for September. It came to 1,198 with reckless driving in third place with 694. The three violations customarily head the list of motor offenses re ported monthly by the Highway Pa trol. The report further revealed the fol lowing miscellaneous violations: faul ty equipment, 747; failing to stop for stop sign, 647; improper passing, 393; improper lights, 334; driving on wrong side of the road, 221; follow ing too closely, 201; and failing to give the right-of-way, 191. Combined the September figures made a total of 7,372 North Carolin ians found guilty of moving viola tions. Out of state offenders added another 1,211. ARTHRITIS?
