Suggestion Made To
Plan Room Schemes
i
7
To plan a decorative scheme for an
attractive and comfortable room, list
the steps in the order of their im
portance. You can then proceed with
ease without making mistakes or
omitting some vital part of your plan.
It is surprising how quickly the job
can be done by following a few sim
ple rules recommended by J. H. Thorp
fabric authorities. Here they are:
1. First, determine the exact size
of your room by measuring its length
and width. Make a floor plan to scale
allowing one-half inch to a foot. In
dicate doors and window spaces, and
keep in mind the height of the ceil
ing.
2. Select from your present furni
ture what you wish to retain. Often
a new upholstery fabric will give that
desired new look to old furniture. Or
a new finish, color or bleach will
bring lightness to old tables and
chairs. Make a notation of any new
pieces you need to buy.
3. Cut out cardboard to represent
furniture pieces, and move these
around until you have the best ar
rangement. Heavy furniture should
be placed opposite another heavy
piece, in a conversation group, or to
balance some architectural feature,
such as a picture window or fireplace.
4. Your next step, choosing a color
scheme, is of utmost importance. Col
or and fabrics can do more than any
thing else to carry out any desired
effect. Cold rooms need warm colors,
such as red, rose, yellow or gold. Sun
ny rooms fare best when cool colors,
such as blue, gray or green are se
lected. Walls, rugs, fabrics in mono
chromatic colors give a spacious es-

look best when made floor-length, and j
