Disappointing Crowd For UN Day Program (Continued Pnom Page One) desperately wanted the United Na tions. Having suffered untold sorrow from two world wars within a life time, they were determined to save themselves and their children, not alone from a third world war, but from total destruction which such a war was likely to bring. Thus, through their governments, they set up this living, working Or ganization and launched the greatest effort in history to preserve the peace and promise of world-wide hu man betterment—to establish nothing less than a world order of peace, jus tice, and progress for all. “The effort seemed a good idea then. It is a last chance for survival today. “The wartime union of peoples who had joined in the defense of civiliza tion was still a fact then, on October 24, 1945, the United Nations Charter came into force. The bitter conflicts of power and ideology now dividing the world were less apparent, conflicts which have since resulted in amassing very powerful armed might. “In several regions since, there has been bitter, costly and prolonged, though localized war. And the peo ples of the world must face the fact that they continue to live today in danger of a third world war with the forces of the A-bomb and the H-bomb let loose. “The Charter of the United Nations remains in 1953 the embodiment of the hopes of mankind. Even though amendments to the Charter may be needed its comprehensive objectives continue to be at the heart of any at tempt to build world peace, justice and progress. “More than that the United Nations today is the best hope—perhaps the last hope—for establishing conditions that could insure peace. Such con ditions are collective security against armed aggression; peaceful setv'.ement of international conflicts mediation, conciliation and by judicial process; control of armaments and particularly those of mass destruction; respect for the equal rights and self-determina tion of peoples; and respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of all individual human beings. “If the peoples of the world and their governments make full use of the machinery provided by the United Nations, and if they develop, support and strengthen it, those conditions can be brought about. “If, however, they let the United Nations fail, there can be no hope. \ The choice actually is a clear-cut one —Disaster and death or life and hope. “As long as might makes right in the world, each nation will jealousi> \oN BRANDI new 1954 / XPHILCQ// \ TELEVISION / NEVER BEFORE COULD YOU BUY ON SUCH CONVENIENT TERMS 1 1 il >,. There is no menace to other nations from coun tries where public opinion is free to assert itself. The nearer we can come to bringing together the public opin ions of nations rather than merely their governmental representatives, the greater influence such a meeting should have. “The sooner we can diagnose the source of infection, the earlier we will cope with the epidemic of evil itself. Bravery on the battlefield is not incompatible with Christian ethics. For the Christian doctrine does not condone the suicide of the state — “Since it is to the individual that the world must look for the evolution i of peace among nations, it is to the' ■ individual in those foreign lands where • despotism holds sway thdt the picture ■ of freedom must be constantly shown. | “The world is still taught by ex : ample.
