SECTION ONE— Orphanages Making Annual Appeal For Thanksgiving Funds Depend Heavily on Sea son’s Offering For Year’s Budget The Thanksgiving season is the most important time of the year for many of the state’s 32 orphanages which have cared for nearly 4,500 de pendent children this year at a cost of approximately $3,000,000. Their supporting constituehces— lodges, fraternal order, religious groups and other non-profit organi zations —usually respond generously to these Thanksgiving campaigns and superintendents of the homes are op timistic about this year’s offerings. The anneal to the Baptist Orphan age of North- Carolina is typical of the other 31 institutions. “Give One Day’s Pay” is the theme and this idea has been used by many homes in this and other states. It was originated more than 30 years ago by the late Dr. M. L. Kesler, general superinten dent of the Baptist Orphanage from 1905 to 1932 and recognized as one of the state’s pioneers in the child care field. Like other homes, the Baptist Orphanage depends heavily on the Thanksgiving offering in the churches since more than one-third of the year’s budget comes in during the season. Fund-raising methods by orphan ages have changed considerably in the last two or three decades. The “singing classes” of yesteryear are almost a thing of the past. They were hard on the children and child welfare authorities frown on them to day as being tinged with exploitation of the child. Children now go out in small groups to enjoy the hospitality of churches and other groups when they are invited. Child-caring homes have found that their supporters will see that the children are properly cared for if the needs are made known. Wards Club News By MRS. A. D. WARD, SR. Under the leadership of a most ef ficient set of officers and with the cooperation of a congenial member ship, Ward’s Club is closing one of its most pleasant and profitable years. In addition to the regular club and community work members have adopt ed, among themselves, the following “Club Member’s Creed:” LET ME BE C—ourteous to others L—oving toward my neighbors U—seful in my home, cluh, church, and community B—usy with my heart and hands to ward those in need M—eroiful and kind to others E—ver erasing my mistakes before I try to erase those of someone else M —emorable of activities B—ountiful with time E—nlisted against poverty, disease and crime R—eliable to my word —And then I will be a better club; member The president of the club offered j the following: “Beatitudes for Homemakers” 1. Blessed is she whose daily tasks' are a labor of love; for her willing hands and happy heart translate duty into privilege and her labor becomes a service to God and all mankind. 2. Blessed is she who mends stock ings and toys and broken hearts; for her understanding is a balm to hu manity. 3. Blessed is she who scours and scrubs; for well she knows that clean liness is an expression of godliness. 4. Blessed is she whom children love; for the love of children is more to be valued than fortune or fame. 5. Blessed is she who sings at her : work; for music lightens the heaviest' load, and brightens the dullest chore. 6. Blessed is she who dusts away doubt and fear, and sweeps out the cobwebs of confession; for her faith will triumph over all adversity. 7. Blessed is she who serves laugh ter and smiles with every meal: for her buoyancy of spirit is an aid to mental and physical digestion. 8. Blessed is she who-preserves the sanctity of a Christian home; for hers is a sacred trust that crowns her with dignity.. The club was very happy to be able to use its community house last Mon day evening. Although it is not com - pleted, it can be made comfortable. The Warwick BTU held a social there in the form of a covered dish sup per. About 40 attended and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the oc casion. The barber-shop quartet was an at tractive feature of entertainment. Page Ten OUTLAW CELLS by Selene* Features ' i In the nine months before a child is born it grows from a single cell to a fully-formed human whose [ body consists of some 200 billion cells. This growth by cell division ; continues until maturity, when natural “brakes” Are applied and the cells stop dividing except to keep the body in good repair. Sometimes, however, certain cells become “outlaws” ana continue to f divide, growing into clumps that harm the body. The result is cancer. How it develops, why it develops, and how it can be treated consti tute one of the most challeng- j ing fields of ! medical re- The traditional treatment for cancer consisted either of surgical removal of the tumor or its bom bardment with X-rays or atomic radiation, but scientists attending a meeting in New Orleans recently heard a report that female breast cancer can be treated with a type of male hormone called Neodrol. According to the report, 42 cases' of breast cancer were treated with the hormone with relief of symp toms noted in 87 per cent or tne patients. These results lend new 1 support to the theory that the ma lignancy of cancer cells may de pend to some degree on the action of hormones secreted by endocrine glands. I Senior Hi-Light By EDNA BOSWELL The Seniors, as well as the entire student body, were very pleased with the number of parents that visited our school last week. We hope that they enjoyed their visit and will come again. Well, last Friday night was the last football game of high school for some of the Senior boys. The team will play next season with the loss of about six. Hats off to the graduat ing players! They’ve done a swell job. The two classmates called upon to be interviewed this week are Laura Jane Yount and Jesse Merle Owens. Jane, daughter of Mrs. Mattie Yount, was born in Granite Falls, North Carolina on February 29 1936. She moved to Edenton from Salem, Virginia in the year of the tenth erade. She is a member of the Tri- Hi-Y. Glee Club, is assistant librarian and chief typist on the Annual Staff. Sports, especially hiking and fishing, are her main interests. Although Jane hasn’t decided what to do after graduation, we feel sure that she will succeed in whatever she undertakes. Born February 3, 1936, Jesse is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Owens. He is a member of the Stagecraft Club and is employed at the Edenton Cot ton Mills. His favorite sport is base- I ball. If Jesse doesn’t go to college next Fall, he will join some branch j of the service. We wish him the best '• of luck. •* BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. Luther Keeter an- 1 | nounce the birth of a daughter, born l Tuesday morning in the Albemarle 1 Hospital at Elizabeth City.
