Sales Lagging For 1954 License Plates Comparatively Few City And State Tags Sold In Edeivton Miss Goldie Layton, branch mana ger for" the Carolina Motor Club, where the new State 1954 automobile license plates are sold, reported early this week that sales for the new plates have been considerably lagging. If automobile owners continue to wait they will surely be obliged to. stand in line as the deadline gradual ly approaches, warns Miss Layton. Her office is on East Water Street, back of Chestnutt Cleaners. The same situation is reported by Town Clerk Ernest Ward, Jr., where only 151 city license tags were pur chased up to Monday of this week. Last year over 800 license tags were sold. Tyner Negro Youngster Is Killed By Automobile F Otis Welch, a 12-year-old Negro, living in the Tyner section, was kill ed about 5:45 o’clock Monday after-! noon when he was struck by a car owned by Peter Privott, janitor at Chowan High School. The accident occurred at the Hert ford-Tyner intersection of State High way 32. Cayton, 77, died at 4:45 o’clock Tuesday afternoon in Cho wan Hospital after an illness of seven . months. He was a native of Beaufort County but had lived in Edenton 30 years. He was a retired employee of the Edenton Cotton Mills. Surviving are four sons, Floyd, Hoyt and the Rev. Preston Cayton of Edenton and W. B. Cayton, Jr., of Hertford; two daughters, Mrs.* Cora Wright and Mrs. Alex Marton, both of Edenton; three brothers, Don Cay ton of Norfolk, Jess Cayton of Aurora and Alva Cayton of New Bern; four sisters, Mrs. M. R. Rowe of Raleigh, Mrs. George Warren of Blount’s Creek, N. C., and Mrs. Grace Holli day and Mrs. Fannie Prescott, both of Aurora. Fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3 ’clock at the Williford Funeral Home. The Rev. E. C. Alexander, pastor of the Chris tian Church, will officiate with burial in Beaver Hill Cemetery. MASONS MEET TONIGHT Unanimity Lodge, No. 7, A. F. & A. Committee Studying City Limit Extension j A committee appointed to study the advisability to extend Edenton’s city' limits met Monday night in the Mu- 1 nicipal Building, when various as pects of such action were considered. The purpose of the city limit exten sion idea is to properly plan for fu ture growth of Edenton in way of new streets and their extension and instal lation of water, light and sewer ser vice. Many angles were discussed by \ the committee, after which it was agreed to secure a map of Edenton and adjoining property to better un derstand what course to pursue rela tive to street extensions. On the | program he showed some ceramics and explained how he made them in art class at Maury High School.
