Valuable his ormation Received At Farmers’ Schools Last Week Attendance Was Not as ( )od as It Should Have Been Farmers’ schools, held at the Court House in Edenton last week, brought to much valuable information based on the latest developments at agri cultural experiment stations. Even though weather conditions were quite rough it is felt that the farm attend ance was considerably lower than it) should have been. Approximately 1001 farmers attended the seven half-day schools. Some of these attended two 1 or more sessions, therefore it is esti mated that approximately 80 differ ent farmers attended one or more of the schools. Also in attendance were 18 others who were interested in the subjects being discussed. On Tuesday morning Specialist Bill Westmoreland conducted an illustrat ed discussion on chemical weed con trol. Dr. E. R. Collins discussed the lat est information on fertilizers. He al so discussed the use of anhydrous am-j monia and liquid nitrogen as a cheap er source of nitrogen material. In the Tuesday afternoon session Specialist E. S. Coates discussed grain storage and drying. He showed pic tures of grain cribs which have prov en successful at the experiment sta tion. Several detailed plans are avail able to farmers for constructing such com cribs and the cost will run very little higher than the ordinary bam constructed. Frank J. Bell discussed new varie ties and the recommended varieties of com, soybeans, and small grain adapt ed to this area. Astor Perry spoke on ways of producing high peanut yields explaining that the two peanut varieties, N. C. 1 and N. C. 2 are proving very successful. Specialist Sam Dodson spoke on pastures and the necessity of good pastures in better and cheaper live stock production. Chowan County is producing approximately 17,000 head of market size hogs annually. Hogs; grown out on good ladino clover pas ture will make gains at a feed cost | of approximately 11 to 12 cents per' pound while dry lot feeding will cost | 16 to 18 cents per pound gain. I To provide sufficient good pasture | for Hie hog population in Chowan j Cou 1,500 more acres of) gooi„Jtriino clover pasture is needed. Thd Wednesday morning session was devoted to a tobacco growers’ school. Specialist H. G. Scott discussed insect control and many insecticides that are proven for use. J. C. Wells covered) disease control in tobacco, particularly j emphasizing soil fumigation to con- j trol nematodes. S. N. Hawks discuss ed tobacco varieties, fertilization, cul-j tivation arid curing. On Wednesday afternoon Dr. Dor ris Rrown gave some most important points in ways to increase the farm income particularly on small farms and pointed out that there is much that can be done on every farm in the way of following good practices to im prove yields and quality of crops and livestock. Specialists John L. Grey and W. T. Ellison brought a wonderful discus sion on the farm woodlands on Thurs day morning. They pointed out that the average acre of farm woodland in Chowan County can easily be made to produce four times as much income as it is doing at the present time. To do this will require some work, good care and management, and forest ftre Albemarle Mutual Burial Association, Inc. EDENTON, N. C. Balance December 31, 1952 $7,140.29 RECEIPTS 1. They 1 I held off 2,000 Sioux Indiana from behind a barricade of wagon boxes control. They highly complimented the people of Chowan County on the fine record they have had in prevent ing forest fires during the last two years, even .though these years have been extremely dry. Poultry was the subject on Thurs day afternoon. Specialist W. G. An drews discussed turkey production and the control of turkey diseases. Tom , Morris spoke on raising good pullets j and making a laying flock pay the i highest returns. These discussions were supplemented by projected col ored slides showing just what the speaker was talking about. On Friday morning Specialist W. A. Stephen brought a most interesting and informative discussion on bees. He pointed out that there are a great many field crops and fruit crops that are dependent upon insects for cross pollination.
