Price Support For • '54 Corn Announced, Program Handled By' Commodity Credit Corporation The Department of Agriculture has announced that minimum price sup port rates for 1954-crop com in com mercial and non-commercial com pro during areas will be based on $1.62 per bushel, which is 90 per cent of the February 15 com parity price,' stated W. A. Harrell, chairman of the 1 Chowan County ASC Committee. Price support rates in the commer cial corn-producing area will reflect the full 90 per cent level, but because com acreage allotments are in ef fect in the commercial areas in 1954, the rates in the non-commercial pro during area will be 75 per cent of the rates determined on the basis of 9G per cent of parity. Under the 1953 pro- Igram, county rates were based on a national average support price of $1.60 per bushel. In announcing the basis for support rates at this time, USDA is giving producers an indication of com sup port prices in advance of the planting season in accordance with the “for ward pricing” provisions of the Agri cultural Act of 1949. The county sup port rates to be announced later will be revised upward if necessary to re flect any increase in parity as of Oc tober 1, 1954, which is the beginning of the marketing year for 1954-crop com. To be eligible for com price sup port in the commercial producing area, producers must be in compli ance with com acreage allotment. The producer must plant within the acre age allotment for the farm to be eli gible for price support. A producer will not be eli gible for price support on a farm planted within the acreage allotment if his share of the overplanted com acreage on all farms in the county exceeds his share of the underplanted acreage on such farms. Allotments for the 1954 com crop in the commercial area were an nounced on January 20 on the basis of com supply and consumption esti mates. The allotment calls for a decrease of about 17.4 per cent from the acre age planted in the commercial area in 1953. A total of 25 counties is in cluded in the commercial corn-produc ing area in North Carolina. Speeding Climbs To New High Mark 5,948 Tar Heels Hailed Into Court During March Speeding convictions on North Car olina streets and highways climbed to a new high in March the Motor Ve hicles Department reports. For the month 5,948 Tar Heels ex plained it to the judge after being hailed into court for speeding. It was an increase of 950 over the preceding month. Enforcement officials credited the sharp increase to stepped up speed control policies inaugurated by the I Highway Patrol and local enforcement i agencies. Reckless driving, as reported in the monthly summary, rose slightly from > 929 convictions in February to 948 last 1 month.
