BTU Elimination Is | Scheduled April 25 L Various Groups Will Vie For Honors In Eliza- M beth City Church The annual elimination meeting for participants in the five major projects of the Training Unions of the Baptist Churches in the Chowan Association 1 will be held Sunday afternoon, April 1 25, at the Blackwell Memorial Baptist 1 Church in Elizabeth City at 2:30 o’clock. This elimination meeting is pre-j paratory to the Regional Convention' in Edenton on April 30 and May 1, at 1 which time the successful participants in the Hymn Festival, Bible Reading Tournament, Better Speaking Touma- ' ment, Sword Drill and Memory Drill will participate in the regional elim inations preparatory tc going on to the State finals at one of the Baptist State Assemblies this summer. Each associational departmental leader will be in charge of the elimination for that particular age group. Miss Carol j Bizzell, chorister, will conduct the I Hymn Festival, Mrs. B. L. Raines will j conduct the Bible Reading Tourna- . ment, Scott Harrell will conduct the Sword Drill, Mrs. Ernest Sanders will conduct the Better Speaking Tourna ment and Mrs. Leon G. Leary will conduct the Junior Memory Drill. Besides churches having represen tation in these eliminations all Train ing Union members, workers, leaders and those interested in the training program are urged to attend and wit ness this inspiring program. The power to transmit the picture will be increased from 24,000 watts to 100,000 watts and the power to transmit the sound will be increased from 12,000 watts to 50,000 watts. These new facilities will serve half a hundred counties in Virginia and North Carolina. The festivities on May 1, the day of the switchover to Channel 3, will have a very colorful May Day theme. A representative from each of the counties in WTAR-TV’s coverage area will vie for the crown of Miss WTAR TV in a beauty contest to be held during the celebration. A unique fea ture will be a May Pole dance around the base of WTAR-TV’s 1,029-foot tower —the tallest May Pole in his tory. The dance and many other fea tures will be telecast from the site c\ VVVb-uvvv^rLiv-uv of the new tower. The lucky young lady who wins the title of Miss WTAR-TV will receive an all-expense three-day stay in New York. She will be accompanied by Mildred Alexander, WTAR’s fashion and woman’s director. The winner and Mrs. Alexander will stay at the Am bassador Hotel on fashionable Fifth Avenue. The visit will include net work television appearances, New York’s fashion houses and Broadway shows. The contestants and their chaper ones will stay at the new Hotel Com modore Maury in Norfolk during the celebration.
