SECTION ONE— REVIEWING THE CLASSICS BY WILBORNE HARRELL j Buccaneers of America, originally written in Dutch by Alex. Olivier Esquemelin—anglicized as Jan or John Esque meling—and published in Amsterdam in 1678 under the title j of De Alcricaensche Zeerovers. Rare and generally out of print. Present English edition reviewed was obtained from England by Heywood Ziegler, Jr., amateur authority on pir ates and collector of pirate lore. In the year 1666, Jan Esquemeling, a native of Holland, set sail from France for the West Indies, thus be ginning a saga of adventure with pir ates and buccaneers that has no con temporary or historical counterpart. Later, returning home, Esquemeling published a book of these adventures which, in a flamboyant subtitle he calls, A True Account of the Most Re markable Assaults Committed Os Late Years Upon The Coast of the West Indies by the Buccaneers of Jamaica and Tortuga, Both English and French. Wherein Are Contained More Especially the Unparalleled Exploits of Sir Henry Morgan, Our English Jamaican Hero, Who Sacked Porto Bello, burnt Panama, Etc. Esquemeling himself, as he tells us somewhere in his volume, was a par ticipant in most of these buccaneer ing exploits, and since what he wrote was the recording of an eye-witness, we can hardly do less than accept his book as authentic and accurate—even though we find some parts of it fan tastically unbelievable. As the writings and publications of Richard Hakluyt have given to us most of all we know about the early days of exploration and colonization on our coast, so has Esquemeling’s Buccaneers of America given us the most complete and authoritative rec ord of the activities of pirates and buccaneers. But for these two men, Hakluyt and Esquemeling, these two phases of our historical growth would in all likelihood be very indifferently I Notice to the Voters of Chowan County { 1 That I Am a Candidate for Sheriff 1 YOUR VOTE AXD SUPPORT | : WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! j Earl Goodwin | I BUT NOW! | Congress cuts Excise Tax j | \ on Sterling Silver 50% f j - . . . It is also a safe assumption i that Esquemeling’s work is the origi ■ nal source for almost all the informa tion we have concerning Sir Henry Morgan, I’OUonais and many other . pirates and their fabulous adventures, ; and a veritable mine of material for i historians and novelists. ' Esquemeling’s early days in the West Indies were spent as the bound ' apprentice or servant to a physician, ; during which time he acquired no small amount of the medical art. And ' although not a licensed doctor, it was 1 in the capacity of a physician and ■ surgeon that he served under Sir Hen ry Morgan, the most famous of all the buccaneers. Esquemeling devoted many chapters of his book to the ad ventures of Morgan, and later, so his tory tells us, Morgan sued the publish ers of Esquemeling for slander and obtained damages. But even though this incident repudiates somewhat the veracity of Esquemeling, he is still the accepted authority on pirates and buccaneers. I have been called to task for glam orizing piracy in my writing, and so in defense of my position for recommend ing Buccaneers of America, I can only remind the reader that pirates and buccaneers have firmly implanted themselves in our fabric of history, our movies, drama, art and literature; and they have become an accepted part of life which makes them fair material for the writer, whose princi pal function, after all, is to present life. Life is a mixture of rawness THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C., THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 1954. and beauty, roses and thorns, good and bad, and it is no duty of the wri ter to suppress or embellish either evil or good. A bit of writing, whether one line or a book, should be a mirror i held up to life as it is—in short, it should be a reflection of the truth. Jan Esquemeling, in Buccaneers of America, has held up a capable mir ror to the life and times and adven tures of the sea-rovers, pirates and buccaneers in the West Indies and on our coast, during the lusty raw period of history when piracy was in flower. The reader who is searching for a full bodied reflection of piratical adven ture need seek no further than Esque meling’s Buccaneers of America. |4-HClubs| By CLARA MASON Assistant Home Agent CHOWAN 4-H SENIOR MEMBERS “ON THE AIR” On Tuesday, April 27, the following Chowan 4-H Seniors gave a brief sum mary to the people of the Albemarle District over Radio Station WGAI, on what 4-H members of Chowan Coun ty are now doing.
