HEALTH FOB Ml | The Unknown Ray In a totally dark room the professor held out his hand and saw the out line of his finger bones. He had been making experiments on radiation when he found that his apparatus pro duced an invisible ray which could “see” through substances which no other light could penertate. With that notorious ray he could photograph i a y beneath the surface of his own skin. When Professor Wilhelm Conrad Eoentgen reported his discovery to the scientific world, he spoke of it as X ray because of its unknown quality. Imagine the excitement of scientists all over the world in 1895 as they read about the new discovery and began to think of the many ways it could be used. The average man was as interested as the scientist. Some modest ladies were afraid Peeping Toms might arm themselves with X-ray cameras. But most people were quick to recognize how tremendously valuable the X-ray could be to medicine. First used for accurate diagnosis of injuries and di-| seases of the bones, soon technical improvements in the apparatus per mitted study of other parts of the body. During this same period, the fight against tuberculosis was being or ganized. Here and there, state and lo cal societies were formed to combat what was then the most serious health problem in the United States. Final ly in 1904 came the organization of the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis, later re-named the National Tuberculosis Association. The young organization early recog nized that the X-ray was to be one of the most important weapons in the attack on tuberculosis. Here was a means of detecting the disease before outward symptoms appeared. The in nocent spread of TB germs by peo ple with unsuspected TB could be checked. The disease discovered in its early stages could most easily and quickly be cured. However, the X-ray was still a cum bersome, expensive process. To find the unknown cases of TB, it had to be brought to the people. This need was met in the early 1940’s by the de velopment of small-film X-ray equip ment that could be transported from place to place. Since then, hundreds of thousands of Americans have had scagening X-rays by which possible c TB are sifted out of the gen era population. The professor’s ray is no longer “unknown.” I 1111 Jk 11 Sensational WIN I “ HOLIDAY HOUSE” ■ V 111 ■or $25,000 in cash f Siß| wl JPi yii 1 m v/f llp( Wrf* jeg ~~ \ 1 L^..-:.... 6206 in KELVINATOR’S *75,000 2 nd Annual “Homemaker’s Holiday” Contest!
