June 2, at a luncheon at St. Paul’s

The club voted to employ Mrs. Merle |
Wilkins again this summer.
The club voted to participate in the
Red Cross drive for additional funds
and Mrs. Goodwin announced that the
Penelope Barker Association is plan
ning to stage a tacky party at the
Barker house on June 18 which is be
ing sponsored by the Business and
Professional Woman’s Club, the Wo
man’s Club, and the Jaycees. Mrs.
Frank Holmes was named the most
outstanding club woman of the year
and her name will be submitted at the
District meeting in September to com
pete for the Carrie Earnhardt District
Award.
TAX COLLECTION
During May Sheriff J. A. Bunch
collected $7,545.05 for 1953 taxes. This
amount brought total 1953 taxes col
lected to date to $168,287.69. The
county’s 1953 tax levy is $184,515.05,
leaving $16,227.36 still uncollected.

of next week.
Consideration of extension of the
city limits and zoning was postponed
until a special meeting next Tuesday
night, when George Franklin of the
Institute of Government at Chapel
Hill will be present,
