SECTION ONE Dr. McGuire Points Out Some Dangers Power Lawn Mower Health Offices Urges Care In Operation to Prevent Accidents The power lawn mower, the latest time-saver available to aid the home handy man, can be the source of many serious accidents if not properly used and maintained, Dr. B. B. McGuire of the Chowan County Health Depart ment warns. The health officer pointed out that the power lawn mower is the fastest selling home appliance on the market today and thousands have been brought into North Carolina’s homes in the past few months. He called attention to the two ma- 1 jor types of power mowers and point ed out the specific hazards relating j to the operation of each. The reel type mower depends on a sharp cutting edge whereas the rotary type depends on a mulching action of the cutter bar to trim the grass. The rotary type mower is usually provided with a guard, but due to its construc tion a space must be provided between the blade and the ground. This neces sary space makes it possible for stones, sticks, and other debris to be picked up and thrown out with great force. This clearance snace also provides an opportunity for the foot or shoe to enter into the whirling blades and a score of serious cuts have been re ported to the Accident Prevention Sec tion of the State Board of Health. The reel type mower operates at a slower rate of speed and may be equipped with a guard or catcher to prevent the throwing out of stones and sticks. The user should be par ticularly careful to avoid adjusting the blade while the motor is running. Other general rules, listed by the health officer include: 1. When powered by an electric mo tor always have a third, or ground wire firmly attached to the frame work. In case a defect develops this ground wire will reduce the electric shock hazard. This machine should not be stored or used under wet con SCHENLEY Blended whiskey, 86 proof. If one should spin a reel or cutter bar while the engine is hot there is a possibility of it starting unless it has been prop erly deactivated. 3. Regardless of the type of ma chine other precautions are: (1) Proper guards and covers on all moving parts and (2) Do not allow children or other inexperienced persons to tamper with or use the machine.
