SECTION ONE— Lost Colony Season Off To Good Start Performances Will Be Given Nightly Except Monday Several thousand persons saw Paul Green’s symphonic drama The Lost Colony in Waterside Theatre at Man teo on Roanoke Island during the first performances of the current summer season, according to General Mana ger Dick Jordan. When the 1954 premiere of the drama was present ed on Saturday night, it was the show’s 653rd performance. Now the longest lived of all outdoor produc tions, the current year is the 14th season for The Lost Colony. Even though half of the company of approximately 200 persons are new this year, they became regular trou pers after two or three days rehear sal in the hot sun of day and the cool breezes of evenings. More than two thirds of the company members are residents of Roanoke Island, where English-speaking America had its be ginning in the late 16th Century. Af ter the discovery of Roanoke Island in the New World, Queen Elizabeth first named the new lands “Virginia in hon or of her self, England’s virgin queen. The story which The Lost Colony tells is that of the colonization at tempts in 1587„ and the events in Eng land which had led up to the events from the time the New World lands had been discovered in 1584. The drama also tells the story of the birth, of Virginia Dare, first white child bom in the New World and the dis appearance of the band of colonists be fore relief ships arrived. Disappear ance of the colonists has become one of the eternal unsolved history-mys tery events of America. This year The Lost Colony will have performances nightly, except Monday throughout the remainder of the sum mer and until Labor Day Eve on Sep tember 5. There has been no advance in admission prices of the play. Dur ing its 14 seasons more than 600,000 persons have seen th show.
