SECTION ONE- A SENATOR ft m LENNON M a|^BBBaHMaaaHßaHacgaßa p aa |f^ aBBHH BMB Washington—The Senate got down to business last week on the big tax revision bill. Tax Bill I voted for the George tax amend ment to increase the personal tax ex emption, as I wrote some weeks ago that I would. My thinking has been that large cuts can be made in for eign economic aid and that some tax relief should be given to the folks here at home. The Senate rejected the George amendment by a vote of 49-46. The final bill is a complicated ; document of eight hundred and sev-; enty-five pages. We worked late at l night, Thursday, adjourning at mid night out of respect to our colleague. Senator Butler of Nebraska, who died from a stroke. Hugh Butler Senator Butler was the senior Sena tor from Nebraska. He had attained great seniority in the Senate, serving as chairman of the Interior and Insu lar Affairs Committee, of which I am a member. He was also on the im portant Finance Committee. Senator Butler had worked diligently on leg islation this session and had undoubt edly injured his health. This is the second Senator from Nebraska to die this session. Senator Griswold died on April 12. Four Sen ators have died this session: Gris wold, Hoey. Hunt and Butler. Sena tors Smith, Tobey and Taft died dur ing the first session of this Congress. No matter how much we I may differ politically, we respect the . right of difference of opinion, honest ■ ly and sincerely expressed, i Adjournment i There are about eight or nine major ■ bills to be handled before the Senate : adjourns. Among them are the farm : bill, foreign economic aid, old age II benefits, postal pay legislation, exten ' sion of the debt limit and several ap 1, propriation bills. A number of bills already passed are now in conference ; I with the House and they will have to I be agreed to. I hope to be able to. join in supporting any effort to knock out foreign economic aid. T plan to i vote for foreign military aid for coun tries that are helping in the continu ing struggle to halt aggressive com munism. Farm Legislation The House turned down the Ad ministration’s flexible farm partly support program for basic farm com modities. I believe the Senate will do the same. My position is that we should continue the present 90 per, cent of parity program. The flexible system would not give the aid when it is most needed.
