SERMONS I
TEXT: “Too clever is dumb.”—
Ogden Nash .
Two farmers with racing stables
were keen rivals. Each entered a
horse in a local steeple chase. One
of them, thinking to get the better of
his rival, engaged a professional joc
key.
The two horses were leading at the
last fence, which proved to be too high
for them. They fell, unseating their
riders. The expert jockey quickly re
mounted and won the race. On re
turning to the stables, he found the
farmer who hired him fuming with
rage.
“What’s the matter,” asked the joc
'HEALTH FOR Ml i
It Isn’t Funny I
Tripping and falling flat on one’s j :
face isn’t funny, even if the only hurt (
is to one’s dignity. It is definitely un-'
funny when skinned knees, bruises, or|
even broken bones are involved.
“Accidents will happen,” we some
times say, and perhaps this bit of phi
losophy helps us feel better when one
has happened to us. But many acci-j
dents wouldn’t happen if we were less]
philosophical and more careful about
preventing them. .
So often what causes an accident is'
such a little thing. A little spot of,
wax on the floor that wasn’t thorough
ly rubbed—a little ear in the stair car
pet—a little toy left in the dark of the
upstairs hall—a little nail loose in a
board on the porch—little things that
should have been taken care of before |
th»v could cause trouble.
Most of us are “going to" fix the
things around the house that we know
are hazards. We are “going to” find
a place to put the flower pots that
have piled up on the cellar stairs, and
we are “going to” fasten the screen
in the children’s room more securely,
and “going to” get a covered metal
basket for burning trash in the back
yard, and get a non-skid pad for the
rug in the front hall.
“I must have a small step-ladder in
the kitchen,” we say, but we go on
using a precarious chair to stand on. i
Today is a very good day to do (
these things we are “going to do.”

key, “I won didn’t I?”
“Yes,” roared the farmer, “you won!
But you were on the wrong horse!”
How often we try to be clever and
outwit others. And how often those
clever schemes backfire. Wise is the
man who knows he is not clever
enough to outwit others and devotes
his energies to improving his.position
by hard work. There is honesty in
such a man. He finishes the race on
his own horse. Simple folks are lov
ed and respected. Clever men are
feared. Their motives are always sus
pected. There is serenity, happiness
and peace of mind in knowing your
own horse and sitting firmly in your
own saddle.
And while we’re at it, why not have
an electrician check that wiring we’ve
had our doubts about ? Why not put
a lock on the medicine cabinet, so that
the youngsters can’t help themselves
to the grown-ups pills? And how
'about a screen to fit clear across the
fireplace?
! Because accidents aren’t funny.
Bruises and bums and broken bones
are not funny at all.

It is the hope of the Health Depart
ment that all expectant mothers get
adequate medical care during the pre
natal period. In the past many wo
men have been delivered by midwives
with only one or two visits to a phys
cian or clinic. It is for this reason
that the Health Department is start
ing this clinic on a trial basis.
