SECTION ONE- U. $. Army Hires Jap Giris As Auto Drivers Yokohama—Military police on duty at the entrance to the Camp McGill Sub-Depot of Camp Yokohama no lon ger do a doubletake when an Army jeep, jockeyed by a gal in civilian clothes, rolls by. Instead, they check the trip-ticket, exchange pleasantries and wave her on her way. She happens to be one of three Japanese females employed i by the Army in the Camp McGill Transportation Section. The girls, efficiently performing such duties as chauffering military personnel and delivering courier mes sages, are among 394 Japanese nat ionals working at the transportation section, located near Yokosuka, site of the IT. S. Security Force’s largest na val base in the Fast East. The sec tion is supervised by a staff of 12 U. S. Army Transportation Corps per sonnel. All Japanese drivers are required to pass the Army’s standard schooling in preventive maintenance. In addition, the drivers must learn to prepare ac cident reports and pass tests pertain ing to military vehicle operation. Physical aptitude and proficiency tests taken every six months, round out the driver program. Each of the motor pool’s fleet of vehicles, ranging from jeeps to trail- . er-vans, has a detailed “personal his- ] tory” file to record its maintenance, j Mechanical repairs of major propor- j tions are performed by skilled Japan ese mechanics at the camp’s mainten ance shops. The Japanese-operated motor pool enables the Army Transportation Corps personnel to be assigned in oth er areas.
