White Oak School !
Closed Two Weeks
Action Taken In Order,
To Help Harvest Cot
ton Crop
W. J. Taylor, superintendent of
Schools in the County Administrative
has announced that the White
Oak Consolidated School closed Tues
day of this week and will remain clos
ed through Tuesday, September 28.
The school will reopen Wednesday
morning, September 29.
The closing of the school for two
weeks is in accordance with action ta
ken at the beginning of the school
term by the County Board of Educa
tion in order to make it possible for
pupils in the school to help pick the
cotton crop.
Edenton Aces Down
Roanoke Rapids 14-6
(Continued From Page One)
picked up 7, after which Holland on
two successive plays made a first
down. Whitson picked up 9 and By
rum then went to the 12 for a first
down. Holland gained 3 and lost 1 as
the quarter ended.
Oepning the fourth quarter it was
the Aces’ ball on the Roanoke Rapids
11, from where Stilley raced over for
the first Edenton touchdown. Jack
Smith crashed through the line for ]
the extra point, putting the Aces in
the lead, 7-6. ;
Birdsong returned the kick from the
14 to the 48, but the visitors were ;
forced to kick as the Aces defense (
strengthened. On the kick Whitson i
grabbed the ball and in a thrilling run,
aided by good blocking, raced 75 yards
across the goal line. The play, how
ever, was called back due to a clip
ping penalty. On the next play Har
rison again thrilled the spectators by
racing from his own 19 to midfield.
The Aces were forced to kick with
Roanoke Rapids getting the ball on
their own 26, but Edenton recovered
a fumble on the visitors’ 21. Whitson
made a neat gain, but the play was
nullified and the Aces penalized 15.
With first down and 25 to go on the
Roanoke Rapids 31, Stilley added
three and Harrison lost 1, but Holland
then flipped the only Edenton pass of
the game to Emminizer, who raced to
the 3-yard line. On the next play the
fumbled, but the visitors could
ghake little headway and kicked out to
' their own 25, when another fumble
cost the Aces the ball. After recov
ering their own fumble, Jack Smith
intercepted Deavers’ pass and scooted
for the second Edenton touchdown.
Whitsan raced around right end to
score the extra point. On the third
play the whistle sounded ending the
game.
Quarterback Tay Byrum had the
misfortune to break his collarbone
late in the game and will probably be
out of action for the remainder of the
season.
On defense Lyn Rond played an
outstanding game, aided by splendid
work by Bill Hardison, Cecil Miller
and Chan Wilson, while Milon Stilley.
John Whitson, Stuart Holland and
Jimmy Harrison looked good on of
fence.
