SECTION TWO— More Care Must Go ' Into Cotton Ginning i Growers Urged to Carry. Out Best Harvesting Practices The dog-eared, trashy looking bale of cotton must go if cotton is to com pete successfully with synthetic fibers, many Carolina ginners believe. Clyde E. Upchurch. Jr., of Raeford, vice-president of the Carolinas Gin ners Association, said last week that cotton ginners are becoming more and more conscious of the necessity of turning out a properly ginned and, packaged product. The North Carolina Cotton Quali ty Improvement Committee, of which Upchurch is a member, was recently | formed to encourage the production of I highest quality Cotton in North Caro- j lina. The first step toward improving the | quality of oqtton must necessarily he i taken by the cotton producers, accord-! ing to Upchurch. He said growers must be encourag- ( l ed to carry but the best harvesting practices. “Carelessly and improper ly harvested cotton cannot be ginned , with results equal to those obtained j with cotton which has hem properly r harvested,” he said. After cotton arrives at the gin. it is, then up to the ginner to examine each j lot of seed Cotton carefully to 'deter• j mine the proper amount of machinery | and heat needed to do the best possi ble ginning job. Tt is also a major responsibility of the gin operator to, keep his yard and buildings clear of J tar spots, grease spots, lint fly, loose j motes and other foreign matter that i could damage the cotton. I Nothing is more perilous ,to men | than a sudden change of fortune. —Quintilian. Commissioners’ Proceedings The County Commisioners met Thursday, September 2, with a full hoard present.
