Whiteman, Jr., a member of the 1954 graduating class of Eden ton Junior-Senior High School, left | last week for Columbia, S. C., where ihe entered the University of South Carolina. Young Whiteman was se lected for an appointment to the] NROTC by the' State Selection Roard. I i after particpating : n a nationwide Navy college aptitude test held last December in which 30,000 high stu dents took part. Due to his high rating in this test, he qualified for further processing and 1 later receiving the appointment. j If he successfully completes his col-j lege training he will be commissioned! as an ensign in the regular Navy or! a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. While in the Edenton school Bobby was a member of the football team and took part in various extra curricu la activities. Fire Chief Will Make Inspection In October Fire Chief R. K. Hall announced early this week that he will begin his , annual fire inspection early in Octo ber. He urges everybody to clean out attics and furnace rooms so that it will be possible for him to make the proper inspection. Those presenting reports were Ger ald James, chairman of club service; . W. T. Harry, community service chair man; Hubert Williford, vocational scr- Ivice chairman, and John A. Holmes,j international service chairman. Each of the reports reflected a con siderable amount of activity during the year, some of which were surpris ingly attractive maps of local historic 'sites to be placed in the hotel, mo- Itels, restaurants and sen-ice stations; a vocational shelf for the high school; ] individual four-way-test plaques for j each club member; the continuation of [annual projects such as the sponsor ship of the Boy Scout units; the pea- I nut contest, entertaining the while teachers of the town and county; awarding of the Rotary Cup to the outstanding graduating senior at the Edenton and Chowan high schools; and at least one meeting a year devot ed entirely to the four lanes of Rotary service. Among the proposals also was a plan to invite an Edenton senior each week to be a guest of the club, who will be designated “Junior Rotarian” At least one visit during the year by a foreign exchange student is also planned. The need of a school activities bus was also pointed out in the reports and President Gilliam Wood will rep esent the club to investigate the pos sibilities of replacing the present bus which is completely worn out. The date of the sale as it appeared in the ad was Friday, October 15, when the correct date will be Saturday, October 16. The farm will be sold at an auction sale on the premises, located on High way 17, one mile South of Edenton, by Campen-Smith, local auctioneers. The sale will be held at 10:30 A. M., and the terms will be announced at the sale. SCHOOL OF INSTRUCTION A district school of instruction of the Eastern Star will be held at Cam den Saturday morning, with lunch served at noon. Several members of Edenton Chapter, No. 302, are plan ning to attend the school.
