M-Sgt. C. R. Betts, stationed at the!

Field, was arrested Wednesday of last
week by Sheriff J. A. Bunch and State
Patrolman Mack Rogerson. charged
with raping a 14-vear-old Negro girl
Tuesday night. He was given a pre
liminary hearing in Recorder's Court i

vin Wilson ordered him to he bound |
over for trial at the November term)
of Chowan Superior Court.
Betts, father of six children, and an

Club at the base Tuesday night, where ■
he met some old friends he had not>
seen in a long time and drank heavily. |

Sgt. and Mrs. Betts and instead of!
taking her home, Betts drove to the
vicinity of Canaan’s Temple Church
and then into the woods, where she.
was assaulted. She testified that ■
Betts threatened to hit her in the head
if she refused.
Betts’ car stuck in the mud and ;
wheii he left to get help the girl left!
the scene and was taken to Chowan
Hospital, where Dr. Frank Wood said
an examination revealed she had been
attacked.
