Moves designed to give greater pro
tection to North Carolina’s more than
18 million acres of woodlands are be
ing made, State Forester Fred H. Cla
ridge reports.
The moves, involving shifting of
some key personnel of the Department
of Conservation and Development’s
forestry division, are:
Transfer of Herman Terry, district
forester at Rocky Mount since 1048,
to Raleigh as an assistant forester
in the forest management branch of
the forestry division.
Promotion of E. F. Corn from as
sistant district forester of the Fayette
ville division to Rocky Mount to suc
ceed Terry.
Transfer of Ralph C. Winkworth,
assistant forester in the management
branch, to the division’s forest fire
prevention unit.
“With the forest fire season begin
ning shortly as leaves of the trees
turn brown and fall to the ground, we
are making every effort to keep down
forest fire losses during the coming
fire season,” Claridge said.

TEXT: “Thy words are like the
cypress, tall and large, but they bear
no fruit.” Phocion.
A noted clergyman was asked by
another minister why the loud, vehem

given way to a more quiet, persuasive
manner of speech. The clergyman
laughed.
“When I was young,” he said, “I
thought it was thunder that killed
people, but when I grew up I discov
ered that it was lightning. So T de
termined that in the future I would
thunder less and lighten more.”
