! ton FHA Chapter, will preside at the
(annual FHA rally to be held in Roan
■ oke Rapids Saturday, October 9. She
I will accompany Miss Carolyn Brink
ley of Plymouth to Roanoke Rapids
Friday. Miss Brinkley is the district
FHA advisor.
Fifteen members of the Edenton
Chanter are planning to attend the
rally. They will leave about 7 o’clock
Saturday morning and expect to re
turn late in the afternoon. Everyone
will share the fun and fellowship of a
picnic lunch on the school grounds.
More than 1.000 girls from Eastern
North Carolina are expected to attend
the rally.
Initiation of new FHA members
was a highlight of the week’s activi- 1
ties. Thirty girls became official l
members on Tuesday when they came
to school draped in Grecian style in '
white sheets pinched around the waist
with a red belt, which carried out the
FHA colors. A red halo attached on |
the head and a water bucket carried j
in the hands completed the outfit.
Each new meml>er, upon the request
of any old member, was required to
say the creed or one of the purposes,
repeat the motto, give the colors, etc.
The initiation was climaxed Tuesday
night with a party at the school!
building. All the girls had fun and
the freshmen came through with" fly-'
ing colors. .

it out, then put it in an ashtray,
j 6. Before going to bed, especially
(after entertaining, inspect the living
I room or game room to be sure no
butts are smoldering under cushions
or on tables.
I Misuse of electricity is also respon
sible for many home fires each year.
Here’s how to guard against the
sparks and overheating that result in
electrical fires:
1. Fifteen ampere fuses are recom
mended for most household circuits.
Never use oversize fuses or tamper
i with the ones already in the box.
j 2. Don’t try to run too many appl
iances from one outlet: you will over-
I load the circuit. If fuses blow fre
quently even without overloading,
have an electrician inspect the wiring.
3. Look for the UL label on all
electric cords and appliances you buy.
It means they passed Underwriters’
Laboratories tests for fire and shock
safety.
4. When an electric cord or appli-l
ance needs, repairs, don’t let a “home
handyman” tinker, with it. Take it
I to. an electrician.
I 5. Extension or repairs to wiring is
also a job for a professional. Wiring
! done by amateurs has caused many
; fires.
6. Don’t string wires over hooks or
iaround nails, or run them under rugs
' where they may he walked on. In
| sulation will break or Wear out.

IN MEMORIAM
In loving memory of our devoted
son and brother, Ferma M. Ward of
Tyner, N. C., who departed this life
] four years ago, October 2, 1950.
| A precious loved one has gone from us,
' A voice we love is still,
It will always leave a vacant place in
, our hearts,
That can never be filled.
We often go down to the river you
loved so well,
The bright, blue beautiful waters,
where you spent so much of
your time,
Catching the glory from across the
sky.
It makes our hearts throb to the
memory of things you used
to say and do.
It creates memories of things that are
1 last,
That were beautiful and true and
helps to ease our sad and j
broken hearts.
Faithful and honest in all your ways, I
Devoted and true to the end of days.
Loving, gentle, patient and kind;
What a beautiful memory you left
behind.
We hope to meet you, Ferma dear,
When our work here on this earth is
done,
With soft music sounding down life’s
listening way,
Giving us back what we have lost in
tears since you went away.
His Devoted Mother,
Mrs. Victoria P. Ward,
