Edenton
Holding their first meeting in the
new Masonic Temple, Edenton Chap
ter, No. 302, Order of the Eastern,
Star, was honored Monday night by
an official visit by the district deputy
grand matron, Mrs. Doris Bonner of
Manteo and the district deputy grand
patron, Robert Spence of South Mills.
The new lodge hall was filled with
visitors from Elizabeth City, South
Mills, Camden and Roanoke Island
and included Mrs. Sally Boeteher and
Mrs. Blanche Twiford, past grand
matrons; Mrs. Irene Twiford of Man
teo, grand representative to Penn
sylvania; Mrs. Nancy Coffman of
South Mills, grand representative to
Colorado, and Annie Laurie Mullens
of Sauth Mills, past district deputy
grand matron.
Both the district deputies made in
spirational and informative addresses,
in which they were high in praise of
the new Masonic temple. Other speak
ers included Mrs. Boeteher, Mrs. Twi
ford and Miss Mullens.
During the meeting both district
deputies were presented gifts of ap
preciation by the local chapter, which
were presented by Mr. and Mrs. Louis
George Wilkins.
During the business session Mrs. R.
E. Leary, worthy matron, appointed
Mrs. W. J. Daniels, Mrs. D. M.
Reeves and Mrs. L. C. Burton as
members of the building committee to
work with a similar committee which
will be appointed at the meeting of
Unanimity Lodge tonight (Thursday).
At the conclusion of the meeting
refreshments were served in the din
ing room, where music was furnished
by Mrs. C. B. Mooney.

also the need of a proper community
life in the development of children
and youth. Conseauently, in all these
veins, PTA has adopted a strong pro
gram for progress in homes, schools,
churches and communities.
“The Edenton Parent-Teacher As
sociation is not an association of just
a select few. This is the organization
of every parent of a child in school,
of every teacher in the faculties of
our schools,” Harry said. “The busi
ness of the PTA is the business of the
parents and teachers working to
gether for the common cause—better
homes and better schools. I urge you
to join the Parent-Teacher Associa
tion now and lend your support to our
program for better homes and better
schools for our youth.”
A membership drive will be staged
during the week of October 11-16 un
der the direction of Mrs. Roland
Vaughan, chairman of the membership
committee. It is the goal of this com
mittee to enroll the highest member
ship in the history of the Edenton
PTA.

TAX COLLECTIONS
Sheriff J. A. Bunch reported to the
County Commissioners Monday that
1953 taxes collected during September
amounted to $719.41 which brings to
tal 1953 taxes collected to date to
$170,855.01. The tax levy is $184,-
515.05, so that $13,660.04 of the 1953
tax levy remains uncollected.
Prepayment of 1954 taxes during
September amounted to $20,603.08.
