Chowan Corn Crop j
Hurt By Drought
Acute Problem Develops
Concerning Feeding J
Livestock
The severe drought has taken a
heavy toll on the com crop in Chowan
County and especially in the Gliden
and Ryland area.
According to County Agent C. W.
Overman, the corn variety demonstra
tion being conducted on Oliver Lay
den’s farm in the Gliden community
was not worth checking the .yields.
However, some varieties did yield an
estimated 12 to 15 bushels per acre.
Yandy Parks, a Gliden 4-H Club
member, had a championship acre of
com last year, but all of his efforts
this year resulted in a yield of lO
bushels per acre.
The question in the minds of these
farmers is “how are we going to feed
our livestock ?” They are being urg- j
ed to plan small grain now for graz- '
ing and harvest for feed next spring j
and early summer. Small grain to I
be followed by combine milo for an
other crop of grain. Roth of these
crops are to be fertilized with nitro
gen and top dressed to get good yields. !
Good varieties of early maturing torn
planted next spring for early hogging
will also help the situation. *

munity, our article of importance to
you this week is what farmers who
hire workers should know about the
child-labor requirements of the Fed
eral Fair Labor Standards Act. A
! portion of the child labor requirements
will he discussed. This partial sum
mary is to help farmers understand
and comply with these requirements.
The Child Labor Requirements of
THF. CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON. N. r "" URSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1954.
the Fair Labor Standards Act apply,
generally to farmers whose crops go
either directly or indirectly into in-,
terstate or foreign commerce. These)
, requirements also apply to a farmer,
who sends his products outside the j
State or delivers his product to a can
ner, processer or a dealer who he 1
knows will send these products out-1
side the State. !
Farmers may not employ children
. under 16 years of age in agriculture
during school hours. These require-j
ments apply to employment of migra- 1
tory children as well as local resident,
children.
During school hours mean the hours ]
when the school district Where the]
.child is living is in session.
This act sets no minimum age for|
j employment in agriculture before or
.after school hours on any school day
or at any time on school holidays and)
during school vacations.
A certificate of age will protect the
I farmer if it shows the young person
to be at least 16 years of age and if
it has been issued by the U. S. De
partment of Labor or an accepted
State system. I
These facts should claim the atten- j
tion of every parent who have chil- \
dren enrolled in the school system for,
this year. i
