The best way I know to describe
the character of Satan is to say
that he is the direct antithesis of
our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Whatever Jesus is, Satan is not;
and whatever Jesus is not, Satan
is. Jesus is the Light* of the
World, Satan is the prince of the
* power of darkness; Jesus is the
Son of God, Satan is the son of
perdition; Jesus came to seek and
to save that which was lost, Satan
J is as a roaring lion, seeking whom
he may devour; Jesus is the Truth
and the Life, Satan is a liar and the
cause of both physical and spiritual
death; Jesus works openly, Satan
is a deceiver; Jesus made a sacri
fice for us, Satan would make of
us a sacrifice for himself; Jesus is
our Advocate before the Father,
Satan is our accuser; Jesus came to
serve others, Satan came to serve
himself; Jesus loves us, Satan
hates us; Jesus is the True Shep
herd, Satan is the false 'shepherd;
Jesus reveals God to us, Satan
blinds us to spiritual truth —and so
on. Having set himself up in op
position to God and Hi? purpose,
Satan has taken upon himself the
direct opposite of all the charac
teristics and attributes of God.
In considering his Works, we
must remember thft Satan’s mo
tive is to overthrow the Kingdom
of God and set himself Up as ruler
of the universe, and that his over
ruling passion is hatred for the
Persons of the Trinity and for all
who have allied themselves with
God. His first purpose to keep
lost humans from receiving Christ,
gad his second purpose, in keep
fng with the first, is to keep saved
. Inmans from maintaining by life
and by word an effective testimony
to the Truth. This he does often
by persecution, such as that in
Comtnunist lands, in many parts of
South America, Spain and Quebec.
But Satan is a coward, and he pre

Ifers the sneak attack to the front
al assault More often than by
open violence, Satan carries on his
nefarious underhanded schemes by
> slander and insinuation.
Through the years, false doctrine
and false teaching have marked
Satan’s attempt to infiltrate the
Christian Church and destroy the
effectiveness of its testimony. In
' recent years this attempt has re
sulted in the revival of two ancient
heresies—modernism and latitudi
narianism. Let us look at them.
( ' Modernism, which is basically the
denial of the authority of the Bi
’ ble as the inspired, inerrant, only
Word of God; and which results in
the denial of all that is supernat
ural, is anything but modern—in
deed, all the seeds of modernism
may be found in the first words of
Satan on record (See Genesis
3:1-7). Modernism starts out with
a diplomatic affirmative: “Yea.”
It continues with subtle denial of
, the authority of God’s Word:
: “Hath God Said?” When Satan
finds this denial is unchallenged he
continues on more openly and de
liberately misquotes the Word of
God: “Hath God said ye shall not
eat of every tree of the garden?
What God had really said was “Os
every tree of the garden thou may
est freely eat: but of the tree of
knowledge of good and evil thou
shalt not eat of it” (Genesis 2:16-
17). Finally Satan becomes bold
enough to contradict the Word of
God—in effect, to call God a liar.
“Thou shalt not surely die.” God
had said, “Thou shalt surely die.”
Nor is Satan contented with this,
but he must go a step farther and
cast doubt on the motives of God:
“For God doth know that in the
day ye eat thereof, then your eyes
shall be opened, and ye shall be as
Gods ...”
Satan is the same today as then'
—and the course of twentieth cen
tury modernism has been the same
as that in the Garden of Eden. It
has resulted in blatant denial of
the Word of God, the Deity of
Christ, and, in more recent years,
His bodily resurrection from the
dead (which doctrine is a cardinal
doctrine of the Christian faith—see
I Corinthians 15:12-19).
The second evidence of Satanic
attempt to infiltrate the Christian,
Church is the appearance, since
World War 11, of Latitudinarian- j
ism, the false doctrine that one re- ,
ligion is as good as another, and
that one may be saved apart from
the atonement provided by God’s
Son upon the cross. In keeping
with its past history, the National
Council of Churches recently held a
“Festival of Faith” in San Fran
cisco at which “Christian” minis
ters raised their voices in prayer
with Moslems, Buddhists, followers
of Confucious, and Jewish rabbis.
How can these men claim to be loy
al to Christ, who claimed to be the
only way to God, the only means
of salvation, and who said that
apart from Him all men are lost
and condemned? In the current
