This provision, he said, ap plies only to women working in mercantile establishments for whom the usual legal maximum working time is nine hours a day, 48 hours p week, and not more than six days a week. '■; For women working in establish- 1 tnentr employing eight or fewer! persons, the maximum legal work-| ing time is 10 hours a day and 55 1 hours a week, Commissioner Crane said. There is no special provision j for increased working hours during j the Christmas business rush son this group of employees, he state!. , Crane also cited the fact that the 1 law contains no special provision for overtime work by minors under l*i years of age during the Christ- f mas business season. Minors 14 and 15 years of age are permitted to work a maximum of 40 hours a week, six days a week, and eight hours in any one day, provided they have first obtained an employ ment certificate from their loapl welfare superintendent. They may not work earlier than 7 A. M., ir the day nor later than 6 P. M., li said. Young men 16 and 17 years of age, after having secured an em ployment certificate, may work a maximum of 48 hours a week, six days a week, an! nine hours in any one day, provided the work is { done not earlier than 6 A.
