Just don’t say “an old dog can’t
learn new tricks.” It’s done every
month in the Home Demonstration
Clubs. Young, old, middle-aged
and those' in-between can take
equal advantage of their opportuni
ties in this organization.
Although it is organized under
one of many names, every worth
while organization has as its goal
to work for the betterment of
something. Town and rural areas
alike sponsor organized efforts with
similar purposes.
One such organization is the
Home Demonstration Club, a rural
and urban women’s group who work
toward the betterment of them
selves individually, their family,
home, community, state and na
tion. It is an organization whose
members enjoy learning by doing.
Few groups are so fortunate as to
have trained specialists for lead
ers. The local home agent is a ful
ly qualified home economics teach
er. She is a devoted and dedicated
leader under whose guidance rural
and urban women are taught the
most up-to-date methods and ideas
of homemaking. And it isn’t her
views alone. She receives the lat
est information and training from
specialists at State College or oth
er fully reliable sources.
To accomplish her task, women
are organized in clubs, which meet
monthly. By demonstrations at

Similarily, the county groups are

Gentlemen, never fear if your
wife wants to attend her club meet

she will probably be planning some

the medium of selling, of course.
According to the women, these
books are entertaining as well as
helpful. Mrs. Everett Wilson,
Route 3, club president, states that
response to their project has been
very good and those who have pur
chased the book of hints have been
well pleased with the contents.

Even if there are silver strands
which adorn milady’s crowning
glory, she can find a world of en
tertainment and helpfulness in the
county Home Demonstration Clubs.
A living example of such a state
ment is Mrs. Sam Morris, of Eden
ton, a member of the Byrd Club
and a most gracious young lady of
73 years.
From Tomato Clubs of 1916 to
Home Demonstration Clubs of
1957, Mrs. Morris has been a con
tinuing spoke in the wheel of
growth. Having been a charter
member, she recalls forty years of
active participation in club activi
ties in Chowan County.
When Mrs. Morris first became
a club member, there was no home
agent part of the time. But when
the Macedonia Club met, she trav
eled via horse and buggy to her
club meeting, serving as president
for three years. Then she was a
member of the Enterprise Club be
fore moving into town, transfer
ring her membership to _the Byrd
Club. For ten yeai's she served as
its president, attended Farm and
Home Week in Raleigh on four oc
casions, the first time being in'
that of club secretary. At pres
ent, she is also county food con
servation leader. Mrs. Lane—De
pendability, the words are synony
mous. It is hoped that other mem
bers will follow suit and work to
1932
Among the countless things Mrs.
Morris has learned through the
Home Demonstration program has
been the art of caning chairs. It
has become one of her favorite ac
tivities and s'sort of hobby. Mrs.
Morris’ favorite piece of furniture
is her father’s old chair, which she
rescued from the trash pile, caning
it and restoring it to its old-fash
ioned loveliness. In ten years, she
has caned around 50 chairs and
stools. Refinishing picture frames
is another specialty.
Before coming to Chowan County
as a bride in 1908, Mrs. Morris
taught school for seven years, first
in Camden County and' later in
Bertie County. Having been grad
uated from Chowan Baptist Fe
male Institute (now Chowan Col
lege), Mrs. Morris states she
taught everything from ABC’s to
Caesar. Among her cherished
keepsakes is a scrapbook with pic
tures of historical places in the Al
bemarle area, a product of a long
time hobby.
It is little wonder that Mrs. Sam
Morris is still an outstanding mem
ber of her Home Demonstration
Club, for activeness has been her
way of life. With forty years of
experience, you can be sure she

their efforts the Wards Club women j
have an attractive community!
building of which they are justly
proud. The next big project is
landscaping their grounds. Situat
ed on a small hill, the building site
has great possibilities if properly
developed. Hats off to the indus
trious women of Wards Club, who
have made plans to beautify their
yard as attractively as they have
made the interior.
Rocky Hock Club
Rocky Hock has a distinction no
other Home Demonstration Club in
the county can claim. It is the
proud possessor of an English-born
member. Mrs. Jack Leary, Route
1, bom in England, now resides in
the community, and has a beautiful
new home. Rocky Hock Club wo
men were happy to welcome Mrs.
Leary as a member, and find com
paring customs of the two coun
tries interesting and entertaining, i
The women have noted that foods,
fashions and social customs all are
different, yet basically housewives
the world over have similar tasks
to perform in the duties of a
homemajcer.
Chowan Club
Being situated in the center of
the county, Chowan Community
Building has been a bustling cen
ter of activities. This was the
first community building to be
built in Chowan County and its
popularity as a convenient meeting
place continues to grow each year.
Mrs. Roland Evans, Route 1, Cho
wan Home Demonstration Club
president, has quite a job keeping
the building schedule straight.
Other than club activities, it is
used by 4-H Clubs, Ruritans, school
classes and clubs, church activities,
other county organizations and in
dividuals.
