To permit le gal abuse to. continue is short sighted indeed- • Review Byway of review, you will re call that I voted last year against the government’s construction of a dam at Hells Canyon. I gave you the reasons why I voted that way. Briefly, the Federal Pow er Commission had issued a li cense to private industry to build the dam. Believing in the.free enterprise system, I felt the gov ernment should not build the pro ject if free enterprise was willing, ready and able to do the job. Al so, I said that lawful contracts had already been made under governmental auspices and that they should be recognized. 1 also pointed cut that the government could take over the dam under the exercise of its power'of emi nent domain should it develop that the project was vital as a govern mental project. Congress approv ed the free enterprise approach. Forced Issue I am firmly convinced that there should be no fast amortiza tion of a project of this nature. Private enterprise should func tion without the blessings of fast amortization.' If is good that this issue is before the Congress for action, and I hope that corrective measures will be forthcoming. Back Home During the past week I was able to keep a schedule of speak ing engagements in North Caro, lina. I must admit that this was a pleasant change for me. It af forded me the opportunity of talking over current problems with a great many of the home folks. I do not propose to press for such action, but it seems to me that Congress would be doing a lot to keep perspective by taking off a week out of each month for members to get among the folks back home. While Jacob was laboring to make Laban’rich, • it was well and good, but now that Jacob was profiting, Laban’s friendliness declined. Jacob saw this and, after talking the matter over with his two wives, decided to depart secretly, fearing that Laban might take his property and his wives from him by force. ft is well to note the character of the relationship between Jacob and Laban. The latter was crafty and selfish, having fooled Jacob in the matter of marriage, having changed his wages ten times in an effort, presumably, to get the better of him, and always prov ing a hard taskmaster and an ex act employer. Jaob had been re quired to pay for cattle torn by beasts and stolen by night or day “of my hands hast thou required it.” Jacob’s service had been effici ent; he had come to Laban small in resources and had built up for him great possessions; he had been unsparing in his efforts for Laban “in the day the drought consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from mine eyes” that proper care be taken of Laban’s flocks. Stealthily Jacob started on his return journey to his native land. Laban pursued him, but, after overetaking him, they parted for ever in friendliness. Mizpah was built and it has come down through the ages as a symbol for the separation of loved ones— “ The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another.” So, Jacob continued his jour ney, but no sooner had he eased his mind on the subject of La ban’s anger and vengeance, than new specters presented them selves to disturb his peacefulness.
