AROUND TIE FARMS M CHOWAN By C. W. OVERMAN, Chowan County Agent Dalapon Kills Wiregrass 4 Dalaphon, trade name Dowpon, is being tried in Chowan County for killing wiregrass. The results are looking very good in spite of the dry weather toughening the plants. The county agent’s office was furnished one case of Dalapon for demonstration purposes in the county. W. O. Boyce of Center Hill community is trying it on heavy wiregrass spots in ladmo clover. Sid Campen of Edenton is trying a small amount to stop wiregrass edging into his flow er beds. W. C. Bunch of Rocky Hock community is trying it on severely wiregrass infested spots on his farm. I am trying it on heavy wiregrass infested areas about the edges of my garden and orchard and in a row of dewber ries. • Dalapon is a non-seleptive ma terial. This means that it will kill almost any plant which it gets on insufficient quantities and will damage wherever it strikes. Therefore, when using it among plants which one does not wish to kill, particular care must be used to avoid getting it on those plants. For example, the dewberry (Slants were covered with a bag before spraying the wiregrass. After spraying, the bags were remov ed. The result is almost a com plete kill of wiregrass and the. dewberry plants are growing nicely. Hog Producing Practices Are Being Surveyed This spring the County Board of Agriculture discussed the swine production situation in Chowan County based on the 1955 agriculture census. They recom mended that as much Extension effort as possible, be devoted to improving the situation during the next year or two. In view of this, personal visits were made to fifteen farms this week gathering information and pointing out needed improve ments in the Glideo community. Items particularly noted were' number of brood sows kept, num- 1 ber of hogs produced from same during the last 12 months period, type of farrowing facilities, acre age of corn and pasture being produced for hogs. Although the survey has just begun, lack of adequate farrowing facilities is outstanding. > Extension Program Projection Emphasized At Agents' Meeting District Agent sohn Piland and Assistant Director Brice Ratch ford, met with county agents of the Albemarle area at Elizabeth City on Friday afternoon. July 19. The use of Extension program projection was particularly em phasized by these leaders. Last year each county conduct ed an agricultural Extension pro gram planning activity known as] “Extension Program Projection.” In the procedure, a group of farm 111 PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT ■ B ORKW B A CD ® FREE INSPECTION B ■ n TERMITE-CONTROL I B PHONE 3223 B ill- I ri i. Each committee listed the problems in its particular phase of farm and/or home work, what needed to be done, and recommendations as to how this might be accom plished, Resulting from this was a cpmplete report for the county. The leaders in a group meeting divided the problems or needs in to three groups: Those which should receive second attention, and the remainder to be follow ed up as time permits. Based on this information the annual program plans of work and work execution are to be car ried out by the people. The two state leaders at the meeting on Friday emphasized the great value of program projection, urg ing the agents to use it constant ly toward farm and home im provement in the counties. One of .the most importantj points in an efficient farming op eration is to get done in an off season those jobs which do not have to be done during planting or harvesting. Taking soil samples is one such important job. Right now is an excellent time to take samples from those fields that are to be i planted either this fall or next spring. Soil samples can be tak en any time of the year without affecting the results of the tests or the fertilizer recommendations that will be made. Taking them early means that the grower will have this job done well ahead of time, and he can then concen trate on other details of planting which cannot be handled just any time. , There’s ahother advantage in early sampling, too. Farmers sending samples in now will have their fertilizer and lime recom mendations back well before planting time. In the past many growers have waited until just prior to planting to send in their soil samples. As a result, the Soil Testing Laboratory get si swamped with work and some de-1 lay results. By sending samples | in early, however, farmers can prevent this delay. Farmers of Chowan County 1 should send their samples in fpr N^/VVVvvvvvvwyvvvvvvv^vvvN^yvvvN WHAT IS CAUSE OF FAMILY FRICTION?
