I | Marine* To Accept 700 For Officers The Marine Corps will accept 700 college graduates for its first two 1958 officer candidate courses, it is announced by Mas ter Sergeant John W. Spelce of the Marine Corps recruiting sub station at Room 407, Post Of fice Building in Norfolk. The officer candidate course provides an important segment of all new officers entering the Marine Corps each year. It is held periodically at the Marine j Corps Schools, Quantico, Va.. and lasts 10 weeks. A second lieutenant’s commission in the Marine Corps Reserve follows the successful completion of this training. Sgt. Spelce said the 21st of-1 I ficer candidate course will be | gin January 13, 1958, and have! [a planned enrollment of 510. The, [ 22nd QCC, with 190 enrollments,' is scheduled to start the follow ing March 31. Bloodmobile Due Monday, Nov. 25 Joe Swanner, chairman of the Chowan County Red Cross blood program, calls attention to the visit of the bloodmobile next Monday, November 25. The bloodmobile will be at the Edenton armory from 9:30 A. M. to 3:30 P. M. and the county’s quota will again be 110 pints’. This was a social event for the husbands, too. There were 37 present for the din ner. The husbands and wives enjoy ed a delicious menu which con sisted of baked ham, scalloped po tatoes, candied yams, toss salad, cole slaw, Waldorf salad, pickles, olives, etc., hot rolls and butter. Coffee, apple and pumpkin pie were served as dessert. I Mrs. I. L- Bestick, chairman, j Mrs. H. L. Lemon, Mrs. R. M. j Bell, Mrs. J. F. Durrence, Mrs. J. |A. Barker and Mrs. S. P. Juds, ! with the help of all the club members, made the arrangements for the dinner to be a success. Colonel Frank H. Collins, ac companied by Mrs. Collins, was the guest speaker of the evening. VFW will meet Tuesday night at 8 o'clock in the Post home. ’57 Christmas Seals In Mail Ralph Parrish and Mrs. James Bond, co-chairmen of the Christ mas Seal Sale 1 in Chowan County for 1957, announce that 1,500 let ters have been mailed this week, and that they earnestly hope these letters will receive careful consid ratiorr^ “Every thinking person should stop to remember that there were 1,850 new cases of tuberculosis in North Carolina last year,” Jhe chairmen say, “and that 263 per sons died of the, disease.” Bringing it nearer home, there were five new cases in Chowan County last year and three new cases this year. At present there are seven persons in sanitoriums. The chairmen point out that the tragedy of tuberculosis is that so many people are exposed to it through unsuspected cases. The National TB Association is working on a vaccine known as I BCG to inoculate people against! the disease and encouraging re ports are coming in from the use I of it, but much money is needed to perfect and manufacture enough for national use. “Stop and consider what has happened to infantile paralysis as the result of research paid for by dirqes given by men, women and children all over the nation,” say the chairmen, “then send your money to the Christmas Seal Sale.” LIONS MEET MONDAY Edenton’s Lions Club will meet Monday night, November 25. at 7 o’clock.
