THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19. 1957. i §WBB By Ted Kesting ----- 1 The farther South you go the larger the bass you catch will be, promises Jason Lucas, Angling Editor of Sports Afield Magazine. They reach their maximum size in the Gulf states. The world rec ord bass, 22 Vi pounds, was caught in Georgia. The reason southern bass at- tain about twice the size of the | northern is simple enough: The mild winters down there permit j them to feed actively and grow! rapidly all year, whi|e in the! North they grow only during the comparatively brief summers. But how about the persistent claim that Southern bass are sluggist and put up a poor fight when compared to their northern I brothers? Lucas says that he re-1 gards southern bass as better game fish than the northern. • PROPERTY MUST BE LISTED IN JANUARY Notice Is Hereby Given That the List Takers for Chowan County will sit at the follow ing places at the times named, at which places and in which month all property ow ners and taxpayers are required to return to the List Takers for taxation for the year 1957 all the Real Estate, Personal Property, etc., which each one shall ow n on the first day of January, 1958, or shall be required to give in then. South seem never to use anything j ! else for them. And a bass hook- j : ed on the surface nearly always j fights near the surface, breaking ; - water often. Have they the stamina, the j | long-fighting qualties of the j | northern bass? Perhaps not size | for size. But, remember, they I ' don’t run size for size, so the av-1 j erage southern bass will give a longer fight than the average I northern bass. As to the accusation that they ! are potbellied: All old bass any j where are inclined to be more J or less potbellied, but age for age, | the southern bass are no more so than the northern, though his I much larger size may make his j corpulence more noticeable. And very many northern anglers seem to agree with him judging from the j growing numbers that go down South for bass.
