PAGE SIX -gECTIOK TWO Volunteer Giving Being Stressedln Easter Seal Sale i I Voluntary giving through the j annual Easter Seal campaign to help crippled children in Edenton is an essential part of the Ameri can way of life. This is a statement made by Ernest Ward, Jr., chairman of the 1958 Easter Seal appeal of the Chowan County Easter Seal So ciety. “Outstanding gains in rehabili tation of crippled children are the result of free operation of the concept of voluntary effort—a concept which has brought the whole field of American volun tary health and welfare services to the world forefront,” he point ed out. S “Each year we are given the opportunity of lending a helping hand to the crippled through the annual Easter Seal campaign. This year’s drive opened Thurs day, March 6, and continues through Easter Sunday, April 6. “Millions of men and women learn first hand about crippled children through the annua’ campaign and work together to do something tangible to help. It gives them a strong sense of per : sonal responsibility and urgency in providing professional care for these youngsters and in assuring their future as contributing mem bers of our busy and complex world. “We must protect this freedom of independent giving by continu ing to conduct our own appeal Approximatel v 160.000 crippled ; children and adults received care and treatment last year from the Easter Seal Society nationwide because of your voluntary gifts to this important work.” ENTERPRISE CLUB MEETS The selection of the “Outstand ing Homemaker” was the high- : light of the Enterprise Home | Demonstration Club meeting held' » at the home of Mrs. Rodney Har rell. Memory Selection: “As often' as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” —I Corinthians 11:26). Lesson Text: Matthew 26:26-29: John 6:35-59: Acts 8:26-39; Ro mans 6:3-11: I Corinthians 10: 14-22; 11:23-29. Our lesson for today attempts j to give Christians a better under-' standing of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. From the earliest times of Christianity Christians have felt their life to be strengthened by outward and visible signs of in ward and unseen realities. Early Christians were baptized as our Lord was baptized. They also broke bread and drank of the cup in memory of the death of Christ. Studying the two passages listed from Paul’s Letters,, we study the implications of the sacraments of baptism and of the Lord’s Sup per. In Romans 6:3-4 Paul stresses the intimate relationship between the believer and his Redeemer. When 9 person accepts Christ and is baptized, he is really identify ing himself with Christ in the Lord’s experience of the Crucifix ion (suffering), his death, (burial), | and his Resurrection (new birth). In a sense the Christian dies to I his old way of evil and dedicates ' himself to a new life. There are several forms of bap- I tism. These forms vary within the branches of Christendom — sprinkling, pouring, single im mersion, triple immersion but | whatever form of baptism is pre- I ferred by the individual mem- I bers or branches of the churches, the basic principle remains the same. Baptism is a rite of a com munity of believers. The vows are made by the candidate, but he i is initiated into a fellowship of : faith. It is important that the practice of private baptisms not be favored. The entire congre gation needs to participate in this fpr the full meaning of the sym bols to become apparent. Through collective participation in each and every baptism within the church, the members who have been baptized previously can find a renewal of faith on which to feed their spirits over and over again. Again, this promotes the feeling of ‘oneness’ within the church that Christ felt was so im portant to Christianity. To many peoples throughout the centuries water has been the symbol of cleansing. In baptism we are cleansed, and our lives are committed to Christ for nur ture, blessing, and consecration.
