Question: 1 want to select the
best tobacco plantbed site possible
this year. Do you- have any tips?
Answer: Select a deep fertile
loamy soil that will warm up
quickly. Avoid heavy clay soils
that hake or crust easily, especial
ly when cyanamid, or urea and
cyanamidis used. The soil should
be well drained, but not one that
dries out too quickly. Avoid dry
ridges. The bed should be locat
ed near a convenient water sup
ply. A soil high in organic mat
ter seems to be helpful in get
ting good stands and promoting
growth.
Question: When using new
ground for a tobacco plantbed
d#n’t you have a lot of trouble
from weeds?
• Answer: Usually, yes. But
good plants, with not too much
weed trouble, are being produced
by using methlyy bromide in the
fall or winter at the rate of nine
pounds per 100 square yards. This
chemical also gives good nema
tode control. It is used as a gas
and must be kept in contact with
the soil for 24 -to 36 hours -with
a gas-tight cover.
Question:’ Just what seeding
rate is suggested for tobacco

i plant beds?
Answer. The exact seeding rate
I will depend on just how well the
I bed is prepared and how well itj
I will be managed. The suggested'
’rate is one-fourth ounce per 1001
square yards where average man.
I agement is provided. Many grow- i
j ers are. finding that they can get
| good stands with as little as one
i sixth ounce per 100 square yardsi
if the beds are smoothed before j
seeding, well managed, and wa
tered at seed germination time.
Question: Is it trjje lhat heavy j
! pruning can cut peach yield?
Answer: Yes. liecent agricul
! turul experiments have shown!
| that peach trees that were prun-j
j.ed least outyielded the heavily!
I pruned trees by 39 per cent. In- i
j dividual pleaches were larger on I
| trees pruned more severely, but -
there were more peaches on those
less severely pruned.
Question: What response do
peach trees give to nitrogen ap
! plications?
Answer: In recent tests, rates
1 pf 0.3, 0.0, 0.9, and 1.2 pounds of
nitrogen per tree were used.
■ Yields increased as more nitrogen!
was added—up through the 0.9:
pound per tree rate. There was a
relationship between pruning and
added nitrogen. The heavily
pruned trees showed the least re
sponse to nitrogen. The amount
of added nitrogen used did not af
fect the size of the individual
peaches.
Question: Are all the different
varieties of tobacco seed listed
