ROCKY HOCK CLUB MEETS The Rocky Hock Local 4-H Club held its regular monthly meeting at the school on Tues | day, April 1. The president, [ Scott Ober, called the meeting to order. The pledge of allegiance was repeated and the group sang “America the Beautiful’’. The secretary called the roll. The members discussed the possibility j of having a weiner roast in May. j A skit was given entitled “The Meaning of the 4-H’s” by Arlyn I Bunch, Scott Ober, Sandra Har | rell and Gene Harrell. Miss Ca | therine Aman gave a demonstra | tion on Farm and Home Safety. After the demonstration was over recreation was enjoyed by all. The meeting was dismissed by everyone repeating the 4-H club pledge. VFW MEETS William H. Cofifeld Post No. 9280, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will meet Tuesday night, April 15, at 8 o’clock. HARRISON BRENT of Norfolk, wife of Colonel Brent, was principal speaker last weak at a meeting of the Officers' Wives Club. Mrs. Brent is author of "Time For a Party," which was the theme of her address. Spires Not Candidate For Clerk Os Court Continued From Page 1. Section 1 Spires came to” Edenton in 1921 as manager of the local telephone and telegraph offices, in which capacity he served until his ap pointment as Clerk, succeeding the late Judge Richard Dillard Dixon, who became a special judge of the Superior Court. He was Edenton’s mayor from 1933 to 1937. During that period, sanitary sewerage lines were laid in North Edenton, the mill vil lage, and many of the cross streets by means of WPA money. Also during that time, the Town sponsored a WPA project for con-1 struction of the present armory, j as well as considerable street pav-1 ing. In 1933 Spires was elected pres-1 ident of the Albemarle Sound | Bridge Association, which organ ization worked in close coopera-1 tion with the late Julien Wood, a state highway commissioner, in j pressing the fight for a bridge “across the Albemarle Sound. I These efforts finally achieved suc- cess, and the bridge was com pleted in 1937, thus connecting the north and south Albemarle L counties. Bobby Ash ley started things for the Edenton nine by drawing a walk, he rac ed home on Sid White’s triple in jto left center. Marvin Ashley i then singled White home. Jesse | Copeland walked. Then Claude | Barnette bunted and Ashley scor- I ed on a wild throw to first base. Then the Green Wave put in j the fast-balling Perry and the Aces did not get another hit. ) Righthander Zackie Harrell went the route for the Aces. He j was in trouble in every inning except one. I Williamston got six hits, the Aces two. Crazy Hats Feature Meeting Os Edenton Woman’s dub A unique “fashion” show fea turing ‘crazy hats’ and a hilari ous satire on the new sack look featured the April meeting of the Woman’s Club here at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Parish House last week. Club members brought with them the latest in Easter bonnets, utilizing every crazy idea possible for a fun-filled program which featured humorous and ingenious designs. At the conclusion of the show, Mrs. J. M. Thorud, club president, and Mrs. Ed Bond mod eled the sack Jook for 1958. They used honest-to-gosh peanut bags, courtesy the Chowan Storage Company, providing a fitting hi larious climax to the day’s meet ing. A camellia show was staged by the club in conjunction with their April meeting with many local flower lovers entering beautiful blooms from their gardens. A number of guests were in at tendance at the meeting including Girl Scout troop leaders. They were Mesdames C. W. Overman, W. A. Free, Maxine Ross and W. E. Moore. Other guests were Mesdames Ben Askew, Helen Sta cey,. R. T. Whitten, Alma Smith, Floyd Swap and William Wilkins. TARBORO TAKES MEASURE OF EDENTON ACES 5 TO 4 Tarboro’s Tigers scared two un earned runs in the last inning to defeat the Edenton Aces 5-4. Jack Bunch started on the mound for Edenton and held the Tigers to two hits before tiring in the fourth iiyiing. The Aces were leading at this point 4-0. But they scored two runs against Zackie Harrell, making his sec ond appearance in two days. Harrell got out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. But the Aces put in the costliest er ror of their many baubles as Sid White dropped a pop fly into cen ter with the base loaded. , The Aces got seven hits. Boy Scout News By BILL GOODWIN Scout Troop 156 will take its first overnight hike in six months next week-end. Going with the boys will be Assistant Scoutmas ter Adrian Wynns and Billy Har ry, Jack Overman and Bill Good win, all members of the Order of the Arrow. Three Explorers, sooh to be come Eagle, are selling peanut brittle this week in order to work their way to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. They are Alex Kehayes, Billy Dail and Bill Goodwin.
