pCivil Defense
Test May 6-7
The extent of North Carolina’s
f readiness to cope with direct nu
clear attack will be put to a
crucia test May 6-7 during “Op
eration Alert 1958”, the fifth an
nual Civil Defense nation-wide
exercise.
State Civil Defense forces are'
getting set t<jr an extensive sim- ]
ulated attack which is expected
to include more numerous strikes)
upon North Carolina “target”;
areas than any previous exercise, !
and which will throw the state j
and its counties and towns en- 1
tirely dependent on their own re- •
sources for the duration of the!
attack period. I
State Civil Defense Director,
Edward F. Griffin, has notified
all local Civil Defense authori-,
ties from Manteo to Murphy of,
the importance of their taking'
part in the exercise. Heads of
all departments of state govern-1
ment and Civil Defense liaison
officers from other agencies have
also been urged to participate.
“Purpose of the briefing,” Grif
fin says, “is to point out the
problems which will be encoun-,
tered in an exercise of the type
expected or an actual emergen
cy, and simplify their plans to
participate.”-

TIP FROM THE TOP...
As a chef for many, many years let me pass on a little tip from
a man who spends more time in the kitchen than you do . . .
the only man, I might add. It’s impossible to prepare a fine
meal. . . unless the product you begin with is also of the finest.
Certainly, the taste of poor beef can be spiced and spiced with
peppers, onions, etc., etc., etc., and you may eventually place
a rather “tasty” dish on the table . . . but just as certainly the
true flavor of fine beef is gone. And, why go through all the
bother when a hot tamale would have done the job better.
There’s only one way of insuring a wonderful beef meal in
our town . . . start with the finest Swift’s Premium Beef . . .
available only at your nearby P.& Q Super Market. Take a
tip from a chef . . . the only man who spends more hours in a
kitchen than you do! Look for the Swift's Premium Label on
every package . . . Your Assurance of Eating Pleasure!
