PAGE SIX BBCTtOIf TWO Grandfather Freshman By JOHN D. McCREADY Californians, who like to boast of their state, were telling some time ago of one of their' citizens who has probably hung up a rec- 1 . ord in adult education, i He graduated - from college at jashe age of one hundred. I North Carolina may have diffi- j Seulty in matching that. But Many of our middle-aged men i and women are taking advantage of the opportunity to get a di ploma or degree. One of these is Chowan Col lege’s grandfather freshman, Rev. ' Frank W. Fortesque, Methodist minister and pastor of four churches. Born on a farm in Hyde Coun ty in 1909, Frank Fortesque grad uated from the Sladesville High School thirty years ago. About that time his father's health began to fail, and* an elder brother was. "entering Duke Medical School; so 1 the burden of the farm—and of the approaching depression—fell on the younger son. Life was hard for ten years.' In 1939 Frank being by that time a ma ried man with four children —the family had only SSOO to live on. But the next years times got bet ter. In 1946 the Hyde County farmer laid down the plow and became postmaster at the village of Scranton. His new position gave him a chance to study, and to meet people—two thines he row regards as providential. “The Lord,” he says, “must have been in that change.” His mother, who all along was , his counselor, had taught for, v°ars the adult Bib'e class in the EDWorth Methodist Sunday ( School at Sladesvdle. When fail ing health compelled her to give up the class, the members per suaded her son to take it. Less than three months later his mo ther died. “The hardest task I ever had,” he savs, “was to teach that class on the Sunday after MILK PRODUCTION UP Milk production on North Car- | olina farms during April totaled \ 151 million pounds, according, to j the North Carolina Crop Report- J ing Service. Product ; on for the month is the second largest of . record exceeded only in April, i 1957, when 153 million pounds, were produced. Milk production per cow in herd on May 1, 1958, averaged 17.5 pounds compared with 13.7 pounds a year earlier The percent of m ; lk cows milk- j ed on May 1, 1958. was 76.0, th ,j | same as a year earlier. Music Hath Charms A second-Hoor tenant ca'led th» party below and shouted: . *lf you don't stop olaving that bit "te l saxoohone I'll go crazv.” 'lt's toe late.” came the rep'y. •“1 sio 'P n !' an hour aeo.” The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without h : s teacher. Elbert Hubbard. I Miniifr«s Os Tinrird Os Public Work? Edenton. N. C.. May 12. 1958 The Board of Public Works met this day in regular session at 7:30 P. M. Members present were A. B. This change brought him rest from the labor of teaching, but ! brought something else too —a j real heartache. He missed the | joy of dealing with the great j themes of the Bible. Then one day, toward the end I of the winter of ’55-’56, his pas tor made a request—that he take part in the conference-wide “No Silent Pulpit” campaign which the Methodists were about to put on, in the weeks leading up to Easter. He felt unprepared and unworthy, but he agreed. As he then spoke in some church, each Sunday of the cam- 1 paign, Frank Fortesque began to 1 be conscious of a call to the min- j istry. Last July he laid aside the j postal service for the pulpit. He ! now has a four-church field near Hertford, his charges being An derson. Bethany. Evans and Cen ter Hill. Two pleasant surprises Mr. For tesque records for his freshman year at Chowan. One is his elec , tion recently to Phi The'a Kappa, .honorary society in junior col leges for high scholarship; the ! other a gift which “some unnam- J i ed angel” made toward his ex penses. I The senior member, of fresh- j man class, who commutes from j his home at Tyner, has had an j | arduous program for the past j nine months, with his four: churches and his college career;! ' and he will have an equally J strenuous time when his second j 'and final year at Chowan begin! in September. But he hopes to hold out. “Meanwhile,” he says, “a wife, four children, a daughter-in-law and two granddaughters will be eagerly awaiting the day when - ‘Grandpap’ gets his diploma.” to Associate Store. $1.95: Home Cable Corp.. $1.00: Federal Power Commission, $3.00; Virginia Elec tric & Power Co., $10,153.60: American Pow e r Association, $600.00; Mueller Co., $126.77; Electrical Equipment Co.. sl,- 825.59; Norfolk & Carolina Tel. & Tel.
